The Pflugerville Police Department’s victim services unit is looking for compassionate people to volunteer their time to help victims of crime.

During an eight-week training session beginning March 7, volunteers will learn how to work with victims of family violence and sexual assault, child victims, elderly victims, survivors of suicide and homicide and victims of other violent crimes.

Director Judy Allen said she is looking for volunteers who have empathy. “I need a person who will assist a victim, but also allow the victim to begin to regain a sense of control,” she said.

She said volunteers give referral information not limited to counseling, legal issues and child care. They also work with people who have had a death in the family by delivering death notifications, giving information on funeral homes and the next steps to follow. The volunteers also provide information on helping children grieve.

“They may go with a victim for a sexual assault exam, assist a victim of family violence in finding a shelter, apply for an emergency protective order or apply for crime victim’s compensation,” Allen said.

Cindy Bocz said her two years volunteering in victim services has been rewarding.

“You’re there for someone on what could possibly be the worst day of their life,” she said. “Just being there to listen and give someone a shoulder to lean on can make all the difference.”

Bocz said her experience with victim services has led her to be more compassionate of others. She encourages those who want to give back to their community to apply.

“It’s a way to help people who are hurting,” she said. “Maybe you have been there and can lead them through your experience and education and help guide them through the situation. If you can just help one person get out of a domestic problem, it makes it all worth it.”

Volunteer training will begin March 7 with a mandatory orientation. Training classes begin March 19 and are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for eight weeks.
