Texas volleyball player Lexi Sun has decided to transfer, the school announced Friday.

Sun, a 6-foot-2 outside hitter from California, was the country’s No. 1 recruit in the 2017 class. In her only UT season, she was second on the team with 3.27 kills per set and was a first-team AllBig 12 selection.

She’ll have three years of eligibility remaining.

“I want to thank all of the people that have impacted me throughout my time here at the University of Texas,” Sun said in a statement released by UT. “I know the Longhorn volleyball program will continue to be successful, and I wish them nothing but the best.”

Sun opened her college career with an 11-kill performance. She was a three-time winner of the conference’s freshman of the week award.

She did not record double-digit kills during any of Texas’ four matches in the NCAA Tournament, and she was benched during UT’s third-round comeback win over Utah.

“This is about Lexi and her family,” Texas coach Jerritt Elliott said in a statement. “We think she is a wonderful young lady. We have a lot of respect for her and wish her the best of luck.”

Texas already was going to have to replace three key seniors from last year’s team — All-Americans Chiaka Ogbobu and Ebony Nwanebu as well as Cat McCoy, the school’s career leader in digs. Sun’s departure leaves Texas with only two pin hitters, Micaya White and Yaazie Bedart-Ghani.

UT will host Texas A&M in a spring scrimmage April 4.

Women’s golf: Three Longhorns are in the top 20 of the second spring Arnold Palmer Cup rankings, it was announced this week.

Sophia Schubert is ranked fourth, Kaitlyn Papp is No. 14, and Emilee Hoffman sits at No. 19.

The top six in the final ranking will compete in the Arnold Palmer Cup beginning July 6.

The event will use an expanded format that pits the U.S. men’s and women’s collegiate golfers against international competition.

The next rankings will be released March 8, with the final rankings coming March 15.
