An Alabama man who was arrested at a downtown Austin hotel Monday pointed a gun at someone, prompting police to lock down the area, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Stanley Price, 61, of Lincoln, Ala., was charged with deadly conduct, a Class A misdemeanor. He was booked into the Travis County Jail, where he is being held on $50,000 bail, jail records show.

Authorities say they started receiving calls at 12:20 p.m. reporting that a man had been seen carrying a gun in the DoubleTree Suites on West 15th Street.

State troopers and Austin police responded, warning people to avoid the area.

DPS Sgt. Victor Taylor said authorities had received mixed reports from witnesses, some saying that a man was seen pointing the gun at passers-by from the balcony of his hotel room.

Many of those witnesses did not stick around, Taylor said, but at least one confirmed Price was pointing a gun at someone in the hotel.

Price was in his hotel room when police responded, Taylor said. Officers called him on his room phone and asked him to come out, but he went onto the balcony instead, Taylor said.

“We entered the room,” Taylor said. “He was ordered to the ground, and he was searched and handcuffed and did not resist.”

Police later found a pistol in the room, officials said.
