UT gets pledge from highly rated point guard

- American-Statesman staff

The eyes of Texas will be on Courtney Ramey next season as the Longhorns outlasted Louisville, Missouri and Oklahoma State for the top uncommitted point guard in the Class of 2018.

The 6-foot-3 St. Louis prospect is the No. 40 player and the No. 8 point guard in the 2018 class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. He is also the top-rated player in Missouri.

After Ramey took an unofficial visit and met with Louisville’s new coach, Chris Mack, this month, the Cardinals made a late charge for the guard, who many believed was leaning toward Missouri and coach Cuonzo Martin. The second-year coach’s ties to the St. Louis area were a big reason Missouri hired him away from California a year ago.

But in the end, UT coach Shaka Smart won out.

The addition of Ramey gives the Longhorns a third true point guard on the roster with returning starter and former top-50 recruit Matt Coleman and transfer Elijah Mitrou-Long, who is eligible this season after transferring last offseason.

Texas’ 2018 recruiting class now ranks No. 7, according to 247Sports, five spots higher than before the commitment.

Women’s basketball: Texas will have a new player with a familiar name this fall. Akins senior Shae Routt signed a national letter of intent to play for the Longhorns, coach Karen Aston said Friday.

Routt is a 6-foot wing and is the 14th-ranked wing player in the Class of 2018, according to ESPN.com. She joins Joanne Allen-Taylor, Charli Collier, Sedona Prince and Audrey Warren in the Longhorns’ 2018 signing class, which is ranked No. 3 nationally by ESPN.

If the name sounds familiar, it’s because she’s the daughter of Texas ex Erica Routt, who scored 1,134 points during a distinguished career from 1992 to 1996.

Shae Routt had committed to Texas while still in middle school but later decommitted. She suffered a serious knee injury in 2016 while at Reagan and finished high school at Akins.

Routt was a second-team all-district selection and an academic all-district honoree. She was her team’s most valuable player and defensive player of the year. She was a nominee for McDonald’s All-American honors. Routt averaged 11.4 points, 8.8 rebounds, 1.8 steals, 1.1 assists and 1.1 blocks.

Women’s tennis: The topseeded Longhorns cruised to a 4-0 victory over TCU in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament at the Texas Tennis Center on Friday.

Petra Granic clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Donika Bashota.

Granic also had a hand in helping the Longhorns seal the doubles point. She teamed with Bojana Markovic to defeat Alexis Pereira and Bashota 6-4.

Anna and Bianca Turati got the first doubles win by defeating Marie Norris and Elizabeth Tedford 6-3.

Marta Perez-Mur made it 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Pereira to start singles action.

Anna Turati pulled Texas to within a win of clinching the match with her 6-1, 6-1 victory over Norris.

The win was the 20th of the season, the first time since 2008 that Texas had achieved that number.

The Longhorns will face Baylor in the semifinals at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Baseball: David Pierce will manage the Stars team for a July 22-26 Stars and Stripes event in Chicago as part of the 2018 17U National Team Development Program, USA Baseball announced Friday. One of the games will be played at Wrigley Field.
