Looking for a slow, boozy run? Try the Fun Stop 5K & Festival

- Fit City Fit City

Love the idea of a running race but don’t really want to go fast? Think it would be more fun to consume adult beverages and glide down a Slip ’N Slide along the way?

You can do all that at the 2018 Fun Stop 5K & Fest, set for June 23. Organizers proudly point out that it likely could rank as the slowest 5K you’ll ever run.

That should come as no surprise, considering the event is also the only 5K in downtown Austin that allows alcoholic beverages on the route. It also features 12 wacky mid-race fun stops, including an obstacle course, a doughnut stop, a water gun station, puppy kissing booth and foam party.

The event, which changed its name from the Keep Austin Weird Festival following a lawsuit last year, starts at 4 p.m. and includes a festival with live music, a Willie Nelson braid station and a gummy bat spitting contest (think cornhole, only instead of tossing beanbags you’re spitting bat-shaped gummy candy). The winner of a costume contest lands a year’s worth of free ice cream from Amy’s Ice Creams.

“I think our most popular stops are Tito’s and our beer stop. People love those,” said Michelle Graham, founder of Bounce Marketing and Events, which puts on the event.

Gates open and music starts at 4 p.m. The run starts at 6 p.m. in front of the Long Center on Riverside Drive.

Entry fee for the race (the festival is free) is $31 in advance or $35 the day of the event. One dollar of every ticket sold goes to the Central Texas Food Bank. To register, go to funstop5k.com.
