UT defense wounded after scrimmage
The Texas defense took home the win at the football team’s first scrimmage on Saturday, but that victory came at a price.
On Sunday, Texas announced that three defensive players suffered injuries in Saturday’s scrimmage. Senior cornerback Davante Davis (hamstring) and freshman linebacker Ayodele Adeoye (knee) were added to the injury report. Freshman DeMarvion Overshown, a defensive back who recently moved to linebacker in the wake of Jeffrey McCulloch’s pectoral injury, also hurt his knee.
The severity of these injuries was not revealed by Texas. A news release stated the players are “currently being treated and evaluated.”
Davis has started 14 times in his collegiate career. Adeoye is a four-star recruit who went through spring drills with the Longhorns. Overshown is a four-star member of Texas’ 2018 recruiting class.
Volleyball: On Sunday, Texas announced that outside hitter Katarina Luketic had officially joined its volleyball team.
Eligible to play immediately at Texas, Luketic will be classified as a freshman. She joins a recruiting class that includes middle blocker Asjia O’Neal, outside hitter Logan Eggleston and liberos Sydney Petersen and Jhenna Gabriel. Luketic and Eggleston, who graduated a year early from high school, fill a void that Texas had among its pin hitters following Lexi Sun’s transfer to Nebraska.
Luketic arrives in Austin from Zagreb, Croatia. She extends a recruiting pipeline from Croatia that also includes ex-Longhorns Mira Topic (2001-04) and Mirta Baselovic (2014-17).
“Katarina is a player that has the experience to contribute immediately and really adds to the dynamics of this team,” Texas coach Jerritt Elliott said in a news release. “She is very driven as a young woman, wants to be great, and we are extremely excited to have her personality and her confidence to mesh with the team right away.”
The 6-2 Luketic has competed for the Croatian National Team since 2016. With the national team, Luketic competed in the 2018 Croatian Cup and Croatian Championship. She started for Croatia’s Senior National Team in 2017 at the World Grand Prix and European Championship.
Elliott told the American-Statesman that he had watched tape on Luketic but had only witnessed one of her matches. Elliott called Luketic “an exceptional blocker” and described her as a unique freshman due to her international experience. As UT coaches gauge her skill set at the beginning of the season, Luketic could challenge junior Orie Agbaji for playing time on the right side.
Women’s golf: Junior Greta Isabella Voelker won the 2018 Dutch Ladies Amateur Championship, which concluded on Monday at Eindhovensche Golf Club in Valkenswaard, Netherlands.
Voelker finished the 72-hole event with a nineunder-par total of 279 (6673-73-67). Voelker won the event by seven strokes.
Voelker was the 2017 Big 12 Conference freshman of the year.
