“Minding The Gap”: Bing Liu’s directorial debut proves that he is a masterful story- teller and a filmmaker to watch. Liu started filming his friends around the time he was 11 when they were all troubled young skateboarders. Over the years, he ended up capturing plenty of awesome tricks by talented kids but probably didn’t realize that he would be able to take that foot age and shape it into a feature that would premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. It begins as a seemingly lighthearted look at growing up but turns into a thoughtful examination of our cultural obsession with masculinity and the “right” way to be a man, the repercussions of domestic violence, the economic struggle s of atownrapidlys eeing its population shrink and the pressures of becoming an ad ult. P owerfully unforgettable. (Hulu)

“Susanne Bartsch: On Top”: This intriguing documentary explores the career of the nightlife maven and fashion icon who has been known for the past 30 years as the “Queen of the Night.” She altered the nightlife landscape in mid-’80’s New York with outrageous special events. Kicking off a post-Studio 54 era, she emphasized uniqueness at all times, often going for a fullscale theatrical experience. Drag icon RuPaul notes in the film, “Susanne picked up where Warhol left off.” The debut film from directing duo Anthony Caronna and Alexander Smith uses the curation of her old party outfits for an exhibition at the Fashion Institute of Technology as an anchor to look back and tell her unbelievable story.
