Hearing Loss and Overall Decline

- Saleem Assaf

My Dad has put off a hearing test and trying hearing aids for at least the past 5 to 7 years. If he keeps waiting, does he risk not hearing well with hearing aids because his hearing has dropped even more?

When you wait before using hearing aids, you face increased physical and mental decline because hearing loss negatively impacts your physiology and your psychology.

Most hearing loss occurs slowly. As it worsens, your interactions with the people and world around you slowly degrades. Your connections to the people and events that are most important to you unravel. Your confidence weakens and your frustrations grow. Hearing loss changes how you think of yourself and alters how others think of you as well. As you wait to address hearing loss, these perceptions worsen.

Also, beyond your 20s, your brain shrinks. That shrinkage speeds up as you move into your 30s, 40s, 50s, etc. Over time your brain becomes less able to acclimate to the missing sounds provided by hearing aids. When you have hearing loss and use hearing aids, you will not lose as much brain mass. Just imagine, hearing better means you do not lose as much brain matter. Putting off using hearing aids reduces both your mental and physical well being.

Call us at the Better Hearing Center at 512-2824327 to schedule a hearing test and hearing aid demo for Dad. Come with him. We will use your voice during the hearing aid evaluation so your Dad can tell how much easier and better he can understand you. Help him strengthen his connection to the people around him.
