UT VOLLEYBALL TEAM GOES THE DISTANCE TO BEAT KANSAS STATE

The No. 5 Texas Longhorns volleyball squad needed five sets but defeated Kansas State 24-26, 25-19, 25-17, 18-25, 19-17 in the Big 12 opener Wednesday night in Manhattan, Kan.

Micaya White led the Longhorns with a season-high 21 kills and a hitting percentage of .383. She recorded a double-double by also making 13 digs to help the Longhorns avoid a three-match losing streak, which would have been UT’s first since 2011.

Freshman Logan Eggleston was second on the team with 18 kills.

Ashley Shook assisted on 62 points to lead Texas while making five blocks. The blocks tied for second-best on the team with Morgan Johnson.

Brionne Butler led the Longhorns with seven blocks and added 14 kills.

Yaazie Bedart-Ghani rounded out the Longhorns with double-digit kills. She had 10.

Sydney Petersen led Texas with 19 digs.

Texas outhit Kansas State .346 to .244.

The Longhorns will be back in action next week, hosting Baylor at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Women’s golf: Texas moved up one spot to finish fourth at the ANNIKA Intercolle­giate in Lake Elmo, Minn., on Wednesday.

Kaitlyn Papp placed sixth with a 7-under-par 209 to lead UT.

No. 8 Texas totaled a 17-under 847, 11 shots behind first-place Alabama. UCLA and Southern Cal rounded out the top three.

“This was a solid start to our season,” coach Ryan Murphy said. “We competed with and beat some of the best teams in the country. We are capable of winning events like this, but ultimately this just wasn’t our week. Our time is coming soon.”

Papp shot in the 60s in each of the first two rounds and had a 72 in the final round.
