First pledges don’t always pan out for Texas
Texas received a commitment from Aledo running back Raycine Guillory last weekend, making him the first prospect from the class of 2026 to pledge to the Longhorns.
Guillory, who’s a sophomore, can’t sign with Texas until December 2025. That’s nearly 700 days from now. That means a lot can happen between now and then, as Guillory can certainly change his mind. And the Longhorns can change theirs.
History actually is working against Guillory and Texas. The same can be said for four-star quarterback KC Lacey, who’s the founding member of the Longhorns’ 2025 class. Texas hasn’t signed its initial class’ commitment since 2020.
Here are those first prep commitments to Texas’ last five recruiting classes:
2024 — Aledo defensive back Jaden Allen: Allen committed to Texas on Dec. 29, 2021. But he backed off that pledge in February 2023 and eventually signed with Arkansas. Allen’s older brother, B.J., transferred from Texas to North Texas this offseason.
2023 — El Campo running back Rueben Owens: For Texas, the 2023 recruiting cycle got started when Owens committed on Feb. 25, 2021. He decommitted that summer. After a courtship with Louisville, he later signed with Texas A&M.
2022 — Lancaster wide receiver Phaizon Wilson: Wilson gave the Longhorns their first 2022 pledge on July 31, 2020 when he committed ahead of his junior year. Three months later, he reopened his recruitment. Wilson wound up at Grambling State before landing on Akron’s spring roster this year.
2021 — Dallas Skyline wide receiver Quaydarius Davis: Davis committed to the Longhorns on June 9, 2019. He decommitted five months later. After a tumultuous recruiting process that included breakups with four schools, he ended up at Jackson State.
2020 — Lake Travis quarterback Hudson Card: Card laid the foundation for the 2020 class when he committed on May 25, 2018. He did end up signing with Texas and made five starts over his three seasons in Austin before transferring to Purdue ahead of the 2023 season.
