Stony Point, Lake Travis roll into quarterfinals

52-point second half lifts Tigers to 88-61 victory

- Colby Gordon

Whatever Stony Point coach Antoine Thompson said at halftime Friday certainly worked.

Not that the Tigers needed any kind of inspirational speech with an eightpoint lead at the break, but they came out and scored 52 points in the second half as they rolled to an easy 88-61 win over Converse Judson in a Class 6A area-round playoff game at New Braunfels Canyon High School.

“I’m really excited about what our second half resulted into,” said Thompson, who has guided Stony Point to at least the regional quarterfinals for the second straight year. “Defensively, we locked in and were flying around. And that’s what I love about us when we play like that on that end of the floor.”

Josiah Moseley had an impressive double-double of 31 points and 18 rebounds, Uzziah Buntyn tallied 16 points and seven assists, and Junior Goodlet finished with 12 points to pace the Tigers, who led 36-28 at the break. Moseley scored six straight points to open the third quarter, and the rout was on from there.

Stony Point (34-1) led 65-41 going into the final eight minutes.

“We really emphasized getting the ball inside because we had mismatches there,” Thompson said. “We took advantage of Josiah’s ability to score at all three levels, and that opened up things for everybody else. … Following that, everyone started playing with more continuity of what our game plan was. Transition opportunities opened up, and that led to us dominating on the defensive end.”

Alan Guyton Jr. finished with eight points and four steals, and Landon Short added seven points for the Tigers, who will play Westlake in a regional quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Burger Center.

Lake Travis 50, New Braunfels 41: Lake Travis coach Brandon Shaver decided to try out a new defense Friday. To say it worked would be putting it mildly.

Holding a Unicorns team that usually scores in the 70s and 80s to barely more than 40 points, the Cavs rode a suffocating zone defense to a win that was more dominant than the score indicates in their Class 6A area win at Lehman.

Hudson Greer scored 18 points to pace the Cavs, while Jayden Thomas had 11 points and Adrian Mathis added 10 points to join him in double figures. But as usual with Lake Travis (31-5), the collective effort was key.

The Cavs also handled New Braunfels’ pressure well and took advantage of their height.

“They try to press you and run-andjump trap,” Shaver said. “We handled that well and made them play defense in the half-court set. … With our height, we were able to get what we wanted. We were scoring inside whether it was posting up or on cuts. We may have only shot two outside shots the entire game, because we were able to do what we wanted to in the paint.”

Lake Travis will play San Antonio East Central in a Class 6A regional quarterfinal Tuesday at San Antonio Pieper, Seguin or Dripping Springs.
