NEW YORK HIK­ERS rec­og­nize the view of 4,715-foot Mt. Colden’s scalped west slope. But not many visit its lonely east side, which of­fers a new take on its wooded flanks, as well as an up-close view of 5,344-foot Mt. Marcy, a mile east. Cir­cle Colden on a 14-mile lol­lipop-loop link­ing the Van Ho­even­berg, Avalanche Pass, Lake Colden, Feldspar Brook, and Lake Arnold Trails. Overnight at any of the first-come, first-serve lean-tos along the way.
