Frieda Schellhase, widow of restaurate­ur

Frieda Schellhase, who worked alongside her husband at the well-known German restaurant he operated in Baltimore, died of heart failure Oct. 30 at BaltimoreW­ashington Medical Center. The Annapolis-area residentwa­s 91.

Frieda Gause was born in Baltimore and raised on Wilkens Avenue. She was a 1939Wester­n High School graduate.

She met her future husband, Otto Schellhase, at the youth fellowship at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church.

After their 1941 marriage and raising her two sons, she became a hostess at the family restaurant, Schellhase’s at412N. HowardSt. The restaurant was known for its tradi- tional German menu of sour beef and dumplings, oysters, wiener schnitzel, cold beer and Maryland rye. The restaurant closed in 1980.

Mrs. Schellhase, a former Ednor Gardens resident, enjoyed dressmakin­g, knitting and making craft items.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Lasting Tributes, 814 Bestgate Road in Annapolis.

Survivors include two sons, Robert O. Schellhase of Severna Park and Ronald J. Schellhase of Bethesda; a sister, Hilda Gause ofLuthervi­lle; three granddaugh­ters; and five great-grandchild­ren.

Her husband of 64 years died in 2005.
