Brantley was third in the 2014 AL MVP voting and batted over .300 each of the last two seasons. ■ Cardinals: OF Matt Holliday was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured thumb. Holliday suffered the injury Thursday against the Cubs when he was hit by a pitch. RHP Luke Weaver was promoted from Triple-A Memphis. ■ Dodgers: OF Joc Pederson homered and finished with three hits to lead the Dodgers to an 8-4 victory over the Pirates. SS Corey Seager also had three hits for the Dodgers, who totaled 17 . ... LHP Clayton Kershaw took another step forward in his attempt to return to the rotation this season by playing catch for the second day in a row. Sidelined with mild disk herniation since his last start on June 26, Kershaw extended his throwing to 90 feet during the pregame session, one day after a session from 65 feet.
