Bruins upset No. 1 Ky.; Clareth’s 33 help Patsos to 200th win
Isaac Hamilton scored 19 points, T.J. Leaf had 17 with 13 rebounds and No. 11 UCLA shot 53 percent to beat top-ranked Kentucky, 97-92, on Saturday in Lexington, its second upset of the Wildcats in as many years.
More impressively, the Bruins did it in their firstever visit to Rupp Arena, where the Wildcats had won 42 straight.
“I don’t think there was anything about them today that was a feeling-out process,” UCLA coach Steve Alford said. “We talk about ‘Don’t go in and jab around the ring to see if you belong. You’re 8-0. You’re playing well. Trust that you belong.’ That was the key thing that guys did from the tip.”
The Bruins (9-0), who entered as the nation’s third-ranked scoring team, matched their season scoring average. Kentucky (7-1) cut a 14-point second-half deficit to 95-92 on Derek Willis’ 3-pointer with 8.3 seconds remaining, but Bryce Alford’s two free throws with 7.4 left sealed the victory. No. 9 Baylor 76, No. 7 Xavier 61: Manu Lecomte scored 24 points to help the host Bears (8-0) defeat the Musketeers (7-1).
Johnathan Motley added 17 points and eight rebounds for Baylor, which has beaten three top-10 teams in the same season for first time. No. 25 West Virginia 66, No. 6 Virginia 57: Esa Ahmad hit a tie-breaking 3pointer with 1:28 remaining as the Mountaineers (6-1) scored 11 of the game’s final 13 points to end a 24-game home winning streak for the Cavaliers (7-1). Siena 80, Fairfield 73: Sophomore Nico Clareth (Calvert Hall) scored a career-high 33 points and coach Jimmy Patsos, a former coach at Loyola Maryland, earned his 200th career victory as the host Saints (3-5, 1-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) held off the Stags (5-2, 1-1).
Clareth’s 33 points were the most by a Siena player since Edwin Ubiles scored 37 in February 2008. Clareth hit seven 3-pointers and finished 12-for-25 from the field. News services
