Patterson clinches top seed with win

Locke scores 13 to lead McDonogh in Public vs. Private Showcase

Marvin Price scored a game-high 26 points and No. 2 Patterson beat No. 13 Glenelg Country, 50-42, at the Public vs. Private Showcase at Baltimore City Community College Saturday in boys basketball.

The Clippers improved to 19-3 and the victory secured the top seed in the upcoming Class 2A-1A North playoffs. The Dragons fell to 17-9.

Patterson used half-court sets to steadily build a lead in a game that had only 14 personal fouls.

NO. 11 MCDONOGH 69, RANDALLSTO­WN 49: Noah Locke had 13 points and Malik Hudson and Marquis Thornes each scored 12 points to lead the Eagles (18-9) past the Rams (11-8) at the Public vs. Private Showcase at BCCC.

McDonogh next travels to St. Frances at Wednesday at 7 p.m. before the Maryland Interschol­astic Athletic Associatio­n A Conference playoffs begin Feb. 21. The Eagles have the third best league record in the A Conference.

COACHING MILESTONE: Steve Oppenheim won his 100th career game as head coach of Dundalk in the Owls’ first-ever victory over Milford Mill, 62-42, on Friday at Milford Mill.

The Owls improved to 15-5 this season, marking the fourth straight year they have reached 15 wins. Dundalk, ranked first in 3A North Division 2 with a 15-3 region record, can clinch a first-round bye and No. 1 seed with a victory in one of its last two games. The Owls host Oakland Mills on Monday and finish the regular season on Wednesday at Franklin.

Dundalk led 27-17 at halftime. The Owls outscored Milford Mill 28-13 in the fourth quarter. The loss ended Milford Mill’s 11-game winning streak and was the team’s first defeat in 2017.

Girls

NO. 2 MCDONOGH 50, NO. 11 POLY 28: The Eagles (22-2), led by Kayla Liles with 14 points, overpowere­d the host Engineers (14-6).

McDonogh used tough defense to hold Poly to single-digit scoring in every quarter.

ATHOLTON 56, MARRIOTTS RIDGE 42: The visiting Raiders (15-5, 7-2 Howard County) ended their two-game skid and had solid contributi­ons from a deep bench to beat the Mustangs (14-6, 5-4).

Marriotts Ridge played well defensivel­y, especially against the Raiders’ backcourt, and had good looks from the field, but didn’t make its shots.

Francesca Vanegas led Atholton with 17 points. The Mustangs’ Sarah Blalock led all scorers with 18 points.
