MAJOR ARENA SOCCER LEAGUE Blast win in OT, clinch division title Friday

-

Maryland football coach DJ Durkin addressed one of the major weaknesses of his team in his first year by making a change within his staff Saturday. Durkin brought back Tyler Bowen, who played and coached under Ralph Friedgen at Maryland, to coach the offensive line. Dave Borbely, who served as offensive line coach last season, will become Durkin’s special assistant. Bowen spent two seasons at Fordham, coaching the offensive line both years and serving as offensive coordinator last season. Under Bowen, the Rams ranked fourth in the Football Championship Subdivision in total offense (498.2 yards per game) and scoring offense (40.1 points per game) this past season. Bowen played three seasons at tight end at Maryland before injuries ended his playing career. He was a student assistant coach in Friedgen’s last season in 2010 and as a graduate assistant for two seasons under Randy Edsall. He also coached tight ends at Towson in 2013, when the Tigers advanced to the FCS national title game, and was a graduate assistant at Penn State in 2014. Juan Pereira scored his sixth goal of the season 22 seconds into overtime Friday night to lift the visiting Blast over the Syracuse Silver Knights, 5-4, and clinch the regular-season Eastern Division championship of the Major Arena Soccer League. Pat Healey (Towson University, Calvert Hall) assisted on the game-winner. Syracuse had tied the score at 4 at the fourth-quarter buzzer on a goal by Joey Tavernese after Andrew Hoxie had put the Blast up 4-3 on his second goal of the game.
