Syndergaard out past All-Star break

-

NEW YORK — Mets star pitcher Noah Syndergaard will be sidelined through at least the All-Star break because of a torn muscle behind his right arm.

Syndergaard, the hardestthrowing starting pitcher in the major leagues with an average fastball velocity of 98.7 mph this season, partially tore his latissimus dorsi Sunday against the Nationals. He has been told not to throw for six weeks and will need a long period to build arm strength again, equivalent to a full spring training,

“It stings,” he said Saturday, two days after he was examined in Los Angeles by Dr. Neal ElAttrache.

The right-hander was scratched from an April 27 start against the Braves with what the Mets said was biceps and shoulder discomfort. Syndergaard pitched Sunday against the Nats but lasted just 11⁄3 innings.

He went on the disabled list the next day.

“I don’t regret it at all,” he said. “I threw a bullpen two days prior and I felt great, ready to go. Just something weird happened.”

Syndergaard threw a 2-1 changeup to Bryce Harper and immediately grabbed under his right armpit and left the game.

“I thought I felt it, a little something, on the pitch before, but it hadn’t been really anything I hadn’t felt before,” he said. “I just kind of felt like a little ache in my arm. And then I threw another pitch, and that’s when I really felt it.”

General manager Sandy Alderson wouldn’t give a timetable for Syndergaard’s return and said the pitcher could be put on the 60-day DL.

“Realistically, it’s going to take a while,” Alderson said. “We don’t know when he’s going to be back. It’s going to be much later in the season.” 1917: Babe Ruth of the Red Sox allowed two hits as he outdueled Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators 1-0. Ruth knocked in the winning run with a sacrifice fly. 2016: Aaron Hill hit a grand slam in the Brewers’ seven-run 10th inning for his third homer of the game, and the Brewers beat the Reds 13-7. 2016: The Mets’ Bartolo Colon became the oldest player to hit his first major league home run, connecting less than three weeks before his 43rd birthday, to help the Mets to a 6-3 victory over the Padres.
