HORSE RACING Positive test for EHV-1 virus prompts Laurel restrictio­ns

Schnider Herard, a sophomore center for Mississipp­i State, will transfer to Maryland, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed Saturday. A former four-star prospect, Herard will enroll in College Park for the spring semester and should be eligible to play after the fall semester next season. Herard tweeted a picture of himself in a Maryland uniform Saturday, with the text, “NEW CHAPTER !!!!! ” The 6-foot-10, 260-pound Herard, who was also offered by Kansas and Purdue coming out of high school in Texas, never developed with the Bulldogs after being ranked the No. 47 prospect in the country and the seventh-best center prospect by 247sports.com. After averaging 5.1 points and 5.0 rebounds in 18.6 minutes per game as a freshman last season, Herard was averaging just one point and 2.1 rebounds in eight minutes a game this season. He will have 2½ seasons of eligibilit­y remaining. Herard, who was born in Haiti, told 247sports.com that he thought Maryland coach Mark Turgeon and his staff have helped developed several big men. He was also considerin­g Baylor and Illinois. MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Stevenson senior guard Danzel Wright is one of 100 players nationally on the watch list for the 2018 Clarence “Bevo” Francis Award. The award, in its third season, honors the top player in small college basketball, consisting of NCAA Division II and Division III, as well as the NAIA, USCAA and NCCAA. The award, presented by the organizati­on Small College Basketball, is named after Bevo Francis, who played at Rio Grande College from 1952 to 1954. Wright has started all 16 games for the Mustangs this season and is averaging 22.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game while shooting 48.8 percent from the field, 43.5 percent behind the arc and 92.1 percent from the free-throw line. WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Fourteenth-ranked Maryland will partner with Play4TheCu­re for the Terps’ top -15 matchup vs. No. 8 Ohio State Monday at 7 p.m. (ESPN2). Play4TheCu­re is a fundraisin­g platform for the National Foundation for Cancer Research. Fans can bid on Maryland memorabili­a on the concourse beginning an hour before tipoff and running through the first half. All proceeds will benefit the National Foundation for Cancer Research. The Maryland Jockey Club has placed some restrictio­ns on shipping in and out of Laurel Park. Sal Sinatra, president and general manager of the Maryland Jockey Club, said Saturday that a horse that shipped to Laurel had tested positive for the EHV-1 virus. The horse has been removed from the grounds but the barn he was stabled in has been placed under quarantine. The horse will be tested off property again Tuesday. If the horse tests negative restrictio­ns will be lifted immediatel­y. If he tests positive again, the restrictio­ns will remain in place until Jan. 30. “We’re asking horsemen in other states and at training centers to check their policies before entering,” Sinatra said . ...
