Mount Saint Joseph pounces on Loyola, 49-6

Big early plays fuel football win; Gilman rolls in soccer

Marlowe Wax Jr. set the tone early for No. 2 Mount Saint Joseph with an 80-yard touchdown run 1:27 into the game. More big plays for big gains followed and the Gaels routed host Loyola Blakefield, 49-6, in football Saturday.

Mount Saint Joseph improved to 6-1 and recorded their fourth straight victory. The Dons fell to 3-2.

On the next scoring drive, Wax Jr. caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from William Atkins for a 14-0 lead with 7:32 left in the first quarter. He added his third touchdown on a 30-yard run with 6:43 left in the first half for a 35-0 lead.

Kahri Barfield made a 41-yard touchdown reception for a 49-0 lead with 1:04 left in the first half. The touchdown pass was the third of the day for Atkins, who went 7-for-7 on point-after-attempts.

Gaels’ defense came up with scores of their own. Defensive back Amir Hall made a 15-yard intercepti­on return for a touchdown and linebacker Matthew Harris scooped up a loose ball and ran 80 yards for a fumble recovery touchdown.

Loyola got on the scoreboard with 8:07 left in the game. Peter Lukish caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Moore to cap a five-play, 50-yard drive. The extra-point attempt was no good.

The Dons previous drive into the red zone with 2:08 left in the third quarter went from a fourth-and-one to a 15-yard loss and turnover on downs.

PERRY HALL 40, DULANEY 6: The visiting Gators (4-2) won their secondstra­ight by beating the Lions (2-4).

TOWSON 14, CHESAPEAKE-BC 10: The visiting Generals (4-2) won their fourth straight. The Bayhawks fell to 0-5. the half.

NO. 4 BROADNECK 35, OLD MILL 0: Freshman Josh Ehrlich went 19-for-28 for 197 yards and three touchdowns to lead the host Bruins (6-0) past the Patriots (3-3). Broadneck’s Jason Carcamo had 10 carries for 101 yards.

NO. 5 ARCHBISHOP SPALDING 43, ST. ANTHONY’S (N.Y.) 42: The host Cavaliers (3-1) went on a 22-0 run in the fourth quarter in a come-from-behind victory over the Friars (4-1). Jayden Umbarger had 17 carries for 138 yards and three rushing touchdowns.

NO. 13 ARUNDEL 56, NORTH COUNTY 12: Austin Slye completed 15 of 19 passes for 177 yards and four touchdown passes to lead the host Wildcats (5-1) past the Knights (0-6). Arundel led 22-0 in the first quarter and cruised.

HOWARD 22, LONG REACH 12: Senior running back Devin Dawkinsran for over 100 yards, and senior quarterbac­k Jerry O'Neill efficientl­y drove the Lions (5-1) down the field throughout the game. On defense, the Lions allowed just one offensive touchdown to Long Reach (4-2).
