Ask who he thinks has great style, and he immediately singles out The New York City-based photographer has been a good friend of Waters’ since she started shooting still photos on his film sets early in both their careers. Now famous in her own right, Garfunkel, 71, travels the world in her work, shooting celebrities one day and interesting people she finds on the street the next. Known not just for the interesting perspective she brings to her subjects, Garfunkel is also known for her own “eclectic tribal” style, a style she admitted she also uses to put those subjects at ease. “I like photographing people who society might consider outsiders; who are a bit off and have their own particular style. Part of being a photographer is gaining trust. When they see me, it opens a dialogue. I look different than someone who is conservative and uptight, and they feel they can open up with me. That establishes the possibility of taking a good photograph,” she said. “My loves are vintage and anything ethnic that I can mix up. I like mixing up years and styles.”
