McDonogh rallies for tournament triumph

No. 11 Eagles slip past City in boys basketball showcase; Curley wins wrestling title

Dave Brown scored 15 points and No. 11 McDonogh put together a fourth-quarter rally in a 46-44 come-from-behind victory over City at the Baltimore Hoops Festival at St. Frances Academy Saturday.

The Eagles (10-4) were trailing 31-25 heading into the fourth quarter and outscored the Knights (3-7), 21-13, in the final frame.

City led 11-8 in the first quarter before McDonogh took a 19-17 lead in the second quarter. Eagles’ Curtis Jacobs had a two-handed dunk early in the game. McDonogh has won its last two games and next travels to Gilman at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

NO. 4 PATTERSON 93, CALVERT HALL 65: Marvin Price scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Clippers (8-2) past the Cardinals (3-11) at the Baltimore Hoops Festival at St. Frances. Patterson used a 22-13 run in the third quarter to get separation. Calvert Hall lost, 91-66, to No. 7 Boys’ Latin Friday night.

NO. 6 NEW TOWN 79, JOHN CARROLL 65: Jalen Bryant had 13 points and Tyson Commander and Cesar Tchilomb each had 12 points, but the host Patriots (3-10) lost their second straight. John Carroll lost to Gilman, 73-68, on Friday. The Titans improved to 7-1.

NO. 7 BOYS’ LATIN 66, FARRAGUT ACADEMY (FLA.) 61: Cameron Spencer scored a game-high 26 points and Sam Grace had 11 points to lead the Lakers (17-3) past the Blue Jackets (6-7) at the Baltimore Hoops Festival at St. Frances.

Boys’ Latin built their three-point firstquart­er lead to 31-24 advantage at the half.

EDMONDSON 64, GERSTELL 55: Keith Bolden had a game-high 26 points to lead the Red Storm (7-1) past the Falcons (8-7) at the Baltimore Hoops Festival at St. Frances.

In the third quarter, Gerstell tried to work the ball inside, turned it over and led to an Edmondson fast break. Bolden, on the wing, finished the fast break with a left-handed floater for a 35-30 score.

ARCHBISOP CURLEY WINS: The visiting Friars (10-2) won seven bouts to become the Loch Raven Duals champion in its 18th year. Curley was led by senior Sam Yakim (145-pounds), who won all his matches. Curley won 62-6 over Glen Burnie, 71-12 over Pikesville, 63-9 over Parkville, 60-15 over Towson, 84-0 over Chesapeake-BC, 63-17 over host Loch Raven and 64-9 over Eastern Tech.

NO. 2 ST. FRANCES 73, NO. 9 ANNAPOLIS AREA CHRISTIAN 58: The visiting Panthers (14-4, 4-1 Maryland Interschol­astic Athletic Associatio­n A Conference) went on a 10-0 run in the final two minutes of the third quarter to take a 56-44 lead and pulled away. Defense and balanced scoring was the key for the Panthers, who got 13 points from point guard Adrian Baldwin and 12 each from Rajeir Jones, Jamal West and Jason Murphy. The host Eagles (10-2, 5-2) got 14 points from RJ Forbes.

NO. 8 LAKE CLIFTON 78, FOREST PARK 51: Michael Gray scored 25 points to lead the host Lakers (9-1) past the Foresters (1-2). Lake Clifton built a 38-25 lead in the first half.

NO. 6 NEW TOWN 100, CARVER A&T 16: The visiting Titans (6-1) won by the biggest point differenti­al, 84 points, all season. The Wildcats fell to 0-5.

RESERVOIR 70, MOUNT HEBRON 65: The Gators discovered a new wave of energy that propelled them past the Vikings.

Leading the charge on the offensive glass and in the scoring column was Reservoir senior Josh Odunowo, who after a quiet first half finished with a game-high 21 points and double-digit rebounds.

Whenever it looked as though Mount Hebron would string together defensive stops, the reigning first-team All-Howard County forward grabbed offensive rebounds and converted almost all of his putbacks to ensure the Gators (6-3) maintained a comfortabl­e advantage. — Kyle Stackpole, Baltimore Sun Media Group
