Black Knights stifle Navy women again

UMBC men continue hot stretch

- By Mike Morea

There is something about the Army West Point women’s basketball team’s zone defense that befuddles Navy.

After Navy coach Stefanie Pemper said her team handled the zone well in Wednesday’s Patriot League loss to Holy Cross, the Mids couldn’t solve the Black Knights’ zone in a 60-48 loss at Alumni Hall on Saturday.

After shooting 33 percent (19-57) from the field and committing 16 turnovers in a defeat in West Point on Jan. 16, the Mids improved on that percentage by making 30 of 51 shots from the floor (39.2 percent), including 5 of 22 from 3-point range (22.7 percent), but the difference was that Army went to the free throw line 27 times and made 20, as compared to Navy’s six times, sinking three.

“We obviously didn’t shoot well enough and didn’t always have the best ball movement and timing,” Pemper said.

MOUNT ST. MARY’S 61, ROBERT MORRIS 51: Jatarrikah Settle (St. Frances) scored 10 of her career-best 21 points in the fourth quarter and the host Mount (11-12, 5-7 Northeast Conference) handed the league-leading Colonials (14-9, 11-1) its first league loss of the season.

UMES 74, COPPIN STATE 54: Ra’Jean Martin scored 16 points and Ciani Byrom had 15 points to lead the host Hawks (15-11, 11-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) over the Eagles (2-22, 2-10). Chance Graham and Kaiya Coleman (St. Vincent Pallotti) each scored 16 points for Coppin State.

LOYOLA MARYLAND 55, LAFAYETTE 52: Taleah Dixon (McDonogh) made two free throws with 1:11 for a 53-52 lead and the visiting Greyhounds (4-20, 3-10 Patriot League) hung on to beat the Leopards (7-17, 2-11). Delaney Connolly scored a career-high 25 points for Loyola.

UMASS-LOWELL 62, UMBC 41: The host River Hawks (7-19, 3-10 America East) opened with a 17-6 run and handed the Retrievers (8-17, 1-11 America East) their fifth straight loss. Freshman Eryn Fisher had seven points for UMBC.
