Madison is the site of both the state university and the state capital.

The University of Wisconsin occupies a beautiful campus, part of which borders the lake. Follow the students’ lead and head for nearby Capitol Square and its slew of restaurants, entertainment options and unique shops. Dominating one end of the square is the Wisconsin Capitol building, the tallest building in Madison and visible from almost anywhere in the downtown area. The impressive domed structure soars more than 284 feet, making it just one yard shorter that the nation’s Capitol in Washington, D.C. Be sure to make your way to its observation deck for a bird’s eye view of the city.
