Kathryn A. Brooks, a re­tired city pub­lic schools ed­u­ca­tor and vol­un­teer, died Dec. 22 from can­cer at the Univer­sity of Florida Health in Jack­sonville. The former long­time Cedar­croft res­i­dent was 72.

Paulus, a home­maker, was born in Bal­ti­more and raised in Go­vans and on the Alameda.

She was a 1965 grad­u­ate of Eastern High School and earned a bach­e­lor’s de­gree in English and sec­ondary ed­u­ca­tion in 1969 from Tow­son Univer­sity, where she was class vale­dic­to­rian.

From 1969 to 1975, Mrs. Brooks held var­i­ous teach­ing po­si­tions at Eastern High School, leav­ing to be­come a health ed­u­ca­tor for the Amer­i­can Lung As­so­ci­a­tion. She was a teacher and direc­tor at Loch Raven United Methodist Preschool from 1980 to 1997.

Prior to mov­ing to Fer­nan­d­ina Beach, Florida, in 2000, Mrs. Brooks had worked for three years at St. Jerome’s Head Start Catholic Char­i­ties in Lo­cust Point.

Mrs. Brooks worked as a teacher at St. Michael’s Academy and then an as­sis­tant at the Nas­sau County Vol­un­teer Cen­ter, both on Ameila Is­land, Florida, from 2007 to 2017, when she re­tired.

She vol­un­teered with the Amelia Is­land Sea Tur­tle Watch, Wild Amelia, Read­ing Pals of Fer­nan­d­ina Beach and Our Daily Bread. While liv­ing in Cedar­croft, she served on the ad­vi­sory board of the old Villa Julie Col­lege, now Steven­son Univer­sity, and the boards of the Mary­land Pub­lic Health As­so­ci­a­tion and the Alumni As­so­ci­a­tion of Tow­son Univer­sity.

Mrs. Brooks, who was an ac­com­plished pho­tog­ra­pher, en­joyed read­ing, trav­el­ing, spend­ing time in na­ture and ad­vo­cat­ing for var­i­ous so­cial causes, fam­ily mem­bers said.

A me­mo­rial ser­vice will be held at 3 p.m. Sat­ur­day at the Mitchell-Wiede­feld Fu­neral Home, York and Over­brook roads, Rodgers Forge.

She is sur­vived by her hus­band of 46 years, John Brooks, a re­tired Univer­sity of Mary­land Med­i­cal School De­part­ment of Ob­stet­rics and Gyne­col­ogy se­nior ad­viser; a daugh­ter, Me­gann L. Driver, of East Sand­wich, Mas­sachusetts; and three grand­chil­dren.
