BU tops Navy behind Whyte double-double

Walter Whyte had a double-double, Max Mahoney nearly recorded another and Boston University defeated Navy 77-54 on Saturday.

Whyte had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Mahoney added 17 points and nine rebounds for Boston University (16-11, 10-4 Patriot League), which earned its fourth consecutiv­e road victory. Javante McCoy scored 16 points and Andrew Petcash had 12.

Richard Njoku had 12 points for the Midshipmen (13-12, 7-7), the only Navy player in double figures.

The Terriers leveled the season series against the Midshipmen with the victory. Navy defeated Boston University 60-58 on Jan. 22.

UMBC 65, New Hampshire 59: K.J. Jackson had 19 points and seven rebounds as the host Retrievers (12-14, 5-6 America East) beat the Wildcats (11-13, 4-7).

Jackson made 6 of 14 shots from the floor, including 1 of 5 from 3-point range, for UMBC. He was 6 of 8 at the free-throw line. Brandon Horvath finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.

R.J. Eytle-Rock scored 11, while Dimitrije Spasojevic had 10 rebounds to go with seven points off the bench.

UMBC shot 40 percent overall, but just percent from distance (4 of 19). The Retrievers evened the season series against the Wildcats with the win. New Hampshire defeated UMBC 65-60 on Jan. 18.

UMES 66, Bethune-Cookman 58: AJ Cheeseman had 17 points as the host Hawks (4-21, 3-7 Mid-Eastern Conference) beat the Wildcats (12-13, 6-5).

Ahmad Frost had 15 points for UMES. Da’Shawn Phillip added 10 points and three blocks. Walter Prevost had 10 points.

South Carolina State 70, Coppin State 66: Andrew Robinson had 18 points and the visiting Eagles (8-19, 4-8 MEAC) had a second-half push that came up short. The Bulldogs improved to 11-12, 6-5.

Coppin State travels to Norfolk State Monday at 8 p.m.

St. Francis (Pa.) 70, Mount St. Mary’s 55: Isaiah Blackmon had 21 points as the visiting Red Flash (17-8, 10-4 Northeast Conference), topped the Mount (10-16, 6-7).

Mark Flagg had 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocks for the Red Flash, who earned their fifth straight win. Keith

Braxton added 10 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists. Tyler Stewart had 10 points.

St. Francis totaled just 20 points in the first half, a season low and trailed 29-20 at intermissi­on.

Jalen Gibbs had 24 points and seven rebounds for the Mountainee­rs (10-16, 6-7). Nana Opoku added 13 points and eight rebounds. Malik Jefferson had seven rebounds.

Mount St. Mary’s 68, St. Francis (Pa.) 44: The host Mount (15-9, 10-2 Northeast) opened with a 22-3 run and cruised past the Red Flash (11-14, 9-5). Aryna Taylor scored 18 points for Mount St. Mary’s. The victory was the fifth straight.

Coppin State 61, S.C. State 42: Chance Graham scored a game-high 21 points to lead the visiting Eagles (2-22, 2-10 MEAC) over the Bulldogs (3-21, 2-9). Coppin State went on a 19-9 run in the second quarter.

New Hampshire 56, UMBC 51: The visiting Retrievers (8-15, 4-8 America) took a 16-15 lead at the end of the first quarter, but faded. The Wildcats improved to 8-16, 5-7. Janee’a Summers scored 16 points for UMBC.

Colgate 79, Loyola Maryland 70: Stephanie Karcz scored a game-high 26 points, but the visiting Greyhounds (7-17, 4-9 Patriot) fell to the Raiders (17-7, 9-4). Colgate started with a 19-8 run and led by as many as 18 points. Loyola travels to Army West Point Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Boston U. 71, Navy 56: Nyah Garrison scored a game-high 23 points, but the visiting Mids (7-17, 2-11 Patriot) fell to the Terriers (14-10, 9-4). The loss was the fifth straight.

Norfolk State 64, Morgan State 57: The host Spartans (15-8, 9-1 MEAC) went on a 16-9 run in the fourth quarter to beat the Bears (12-13, 8-4). Chelsea Mitchell (Atholton) had 18 points for Morgan State, which travels to South Carolina State Monday.

Bethune-Cookman 62, UMES 53: The visiting Wildcats (18-5, 10-1 MEAC) used a 20-8 run in the third quarter to pull away from the Hawks (5-18, 2-8). UMES was led by Adrienne Jones (13 points, Harford Community College) and Brooklyn Bailey (11 points).
