UMBC emerges with win in4OT

Dupuis’ unassisted goal finally defeats Stony Brook

Nick Dupuis scored the unassisted game-winner during an extra man opportunit­y with 1 minute, 9 seconds left in the fourth overtime as host UMBC won 13-12 over Stony Brook in an America East men’s lacrosse opener Saturday.

The game marked the longest in school history and the Retrievers (2-0, 1-0) are now 3-0 in games going three or more overtime. The Seawolves dropped to 2-2, 0-1.

Dupuis finished with three goals and two assists. The game-winner was his second man-up goal of the day. Brett McIntyre had four goals for UMBC.

The Retrievers trailed 7-5 at the half before going on a 5-2 run in the third quarter. Stony Brook scored the last two regulation goals, at 7:11 and with seven seconds left, to force overtime.

Tommy Lingner (2-0) made 16 saves for UMBC.

The Retrievers travel to Binghamton next Saturday.

No. 13 Lehigh 10, No. 10 Loyola Maryland 6: The host Hawks (2-0, 1-0 Patriot League) used a 4-0 run midway through the game to pull away from the Greyhounds (2-2, 0-1).

Lehigh outshot Loyola 46-29.

Kevin Lindley and Peter Swindell each scored twice for the Greyhounds. Loyola will host Lafayette next Saturday at 2 p.m.

Hobart 13, Mount St. Mary’s 9: The host Statesmen (1-0, 1-0 Northeast Conference) went on a 4-0 run to close the game and beat the Mount (1-5, 1-1).

Mount St. Mary’s Luke Frankeny tied the game at 9-9 on an assist from Brendan Doyle (Loyola Blakefield) with 2:17 left in the third quarter.

Drexel 12, Towson 10: The host Dragons (1-0, 1-0 Colonial Athletic Associatio­n) used a 5-1 run in the fourth quarter and beat the Tigers (2-4, 0-1).

Austin Stewart scored unassisted with 9:15 left in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 10-10, the fifth tie of the game. Drexel answered with a pair of goals with 7:05 and 2:38 left in the game.

Lynchburg 10, Salisbury 8: The host Hornets (3-0, 1-0 Capital Athletic Conference) went on a 4-2 run in the fourth quarter to topple the Sea Gulls (0-1, 0-1). Cross Ferrara had three goals on 10 shots for Salisbury,

The Sea Gulls went 7-0 in 2020. Frostburg State 12, Lake Erie 11: Tanner Donaldson scored the go-ahead goal with 46 seconds left to play to lift the visiting Bobcats (2-0) over the Storm (0-2). Frostburg State went on a 5-3 run in the fourth quarter. Donaldson, Nick Gallagher, Jake Bowman and Paul Ruppert (Severna Park) all scored two goals for the Bobcats.

Bucknell at Navy, ppd.: The game between the Bison (0-0) and host Mids (2-0) was postponed due to the Naval Academy being under a restrictio­n of movement. A makeup date has not been announced. The Mids will next travel to league opponent Lafayette on March 20.
