Ruppel leads No. 9 Terps men past No. 3 Princeton

Here’s a roundup of college lacrosse games from around the state this week.

Division I men

No. 9 Maryland 11, No. 3 Princeton 5: Freshman goalie Brian Ruppel (Catonsvill­e) made 14 saves in his college debut to anchor a Terps defense that allowed just five goals against the host Tigers (2-1).

The 14 saves were the most by a Maryland freshman in his first-career start since Hall of Famer Brian Dougherty made 23 in his first start as freshman on May 4, 1993, versus Towson State.

On offense, Daniel Maltz scored four goals and added an assist, and Jack Koras (Loyola Blakefield) had three goals and an assist for Maryland (3-1). Daniel Kelly (Calvert Hall) also scored two goals, while Owen Murphy (Johns Hopkins) and Ryan Siracusa each chipped in one.

No. 14 Rutgers 10, No. 6 Loyola Maryland 6:

The host Scarlet Knights (3-1) used a 5-1 run in the third quarter to take control Saturday. Matthew Minicus scored twice for the Greyhounds (2-1).

High Point 14, Navy 13: Mac Haley completed his hat trick with 5 minutes, 16 seconds left to play and the visiting Midshipmen (2-2) drew within one goal before falling to the Panthers (3-1) on Saturday. Navy has lost two straight.

Mateo Brown (Mt. Hebron) scored a game-high five goals and Josh Tang (Archbishop Spalding) had three to lead the host Retrievers (2-0) past the Mount (1-4) on Friday. UMBC went on a 7-0 run in the third quarter to extend the lead. Jared McMahon scored twice for Mount St. Mary’s.

UMBC 16, Mount St. Mary’s 6:

Luke Downs (Calvert Hall) made 12 saves, but the visiting Tigers (1-2) fell to the Spiders (2-1) on Friday. Richmond took the lead late in the first half and held on to win.

Richmond 10, Towson 7:

Attackmen Brendan Grimes and Ian Krampf and midfielder Matt Collison each scored three goals for the Blue Jays (3-2), while attackmen Jordan Hyde and Ryan Stines each had two goals for the Utes (1-3).

Division I women

No. 6 Maryland 14, No. 7 Florida 13: Victoria Hensh (Marriotts Ridge) scored the go-ahead goal with 17 seconds left in the game to lift the visiting Terps (2-1) over the Gators (1-2) on Saturday.

Libby May (Hereford) scored a gamehigh six goals and Hensh had four for Maryland.

Penn 13, No. 16 Johns Hopkins 12, OT: Anna Brandt (Hereford) assisted on the tying goal by Erika Chung as time expired in regulation and scored the game-winner in overtime to help the visiting Quakers (2-0) outlast the Blue Jays (1-2) on Saturday. Ashley Mackin had a game-high five goals and Georgie Gorelick had a hat trick for Hopkins.

UMBC 15, Mount St. Mary’s 10: The host Retrievers (3-1) went on a 6-2 run in the fourth quarter and beat the Mount (0-3)

on Saturday. Dani Donoghue had a gamehigh six goals for Mount St. Mary’s.

Dymin Gerow had four goals for UMBC.

Villanova 11, Navy 10, OT: Sami Carey scored the game-winner on an assist from Kayla Gulmi with 1:21 left to play to lift the host Wildcats (4-0) over the Mids (2-2) on Saturday. Ava Yovino scored the tying goal for Navy with 1:40 left in regulation.

Sydni Black had five goals and two assists and Meg Hillman had four goals to lead the visiting Greyhounds (2-0) over the Tigers (2-1) on Wednesday.

Loyola went on a 6-0 run in the first quarter and a 5-0 run in the third quarter.

No. 8 Loyola Maryland 16, Towson 5:

No. 6 Maryland 15, Drexel 9: Libby May (Hereford) scored a game-high six goals and Hannah Leubecker had four to lead the visiting Terps over the Dragons (2-2) on Tuesday. Maryland opened with a 5-0 run.

Frostburg State 16, Lewis 5

Division III women
