Hunt goes into Saturday for first time since 2004 return

-

Today will be the first day of Saturday hunting since Maryland’s annual black bear hunt returned in 2004 after a 51-year absence. After a recordsetting opening day of 41 bears Monday in Garrett and Allegany counties, the weather deteriorated, leading to fewer hunters and a decline in the bear harvest, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. As of Friday night, 83 bears had been taken this week, short of the quota range of 95 to 130.
