The Rev. Terrence Toland, educator

The Rev. Terrence “Terry” Toland, former president of St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia who had also been campus minister at Loyola University Maryland, died Oct. 18 of heart failure at Manresa Hall, Loyola Center, in Merion, Pa. He was 90.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Father Toland graduated in 1939 from St. Joseph’s Preparatory School and entered the Society of Jesus.

He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Loyola University in Chicago and his theology degree from the old Woodstock College in Baltimore County. He received his doctorate in theology from the Gregorian University in Rome.

Father Toland was professor of theology and dean at Woodstock College from 1958 until 1966, when he was named executive vice president of St. Joseph’s College, now St. Joseph’s University.

In 1968, he was appointed university president, a position he held until stepping down in 1976 when he was named campus minister and rector at Loyola University Maryland.

Father Toland served as provincial assistant for higher education from 1981 to 1989, until being appointed director in 1990 of Manresa on the Severn, the Jesuit retreat center in Anne Arundel County.

He held various other positions with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, the University of Scranton in Scranton, Pa., and Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, W.Va. From 2005 until retiring in 2012, he was involved with the parish ministry at Old St. Joseph’s Church in Philadelphia.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 7 p.m. today at St. Matthias Roman Catholic Church, 128 Bryn Mawr Ave., Bala- Cynwyd, Pa.

Father Toland is survived by a sister, Patricia Hyland of Havertown, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.
