Fundraiser for Lenny Moore statue, wax figure launched today

Today, the Lenny Moore Statue and Wax Figurine Committee, in collaboration with the Ed Block Courage Award Foundation, will launch a fundraising drive to purchase and build both a statue and a wax figurine in honor of former Baltimore Colts running back Lenny Moore, a Pro Football Hall of Famer who turns 80 years old today. Moore played as a halfback for Penn State and the Colts, with whom he was named NFL Rookie of the Year in 1956. In 1958, he caught a career-high 50 passes for 938 yards and seven touchdowns in helping the Colts win the NFL championship. He then had 47 receptions for 846 yards and six touchdowns as the Colts repeated as champions the next year. MEN’SCOLLEGEBASKETBALL: No. 10 St. Mary’s outscored No. 18 Middlebury 10-7 in overtime en route to an 81-78 victory in the Hoopsville Classic at Stevenson on Sunday. The Seahawks (2-1) trailed 78-77 with 1:29 left in overtime, but seniors Donn Hill (Bel Air) and Kyle Wise (Calvert Hall) combined to shoot 4-for-4 at the free-throw line to give St. Mary’s a three-point edge over the Panthers (3-2). Hill finished the game with 18 points, and Troy Spurrier (Glenelg) chipped in 10. ... After being tied at 37 at the half, Division III Salisbury (2-2) lost to No. 19 Cabrini, 83-72, in the Hoopsville Classic. Senior Tim Harwood led the Sea Gulls with 16 points, shooting 5-for-10 from the field and connecting on 2 of 5 from behind the arc; he was namedto the All-Tournament team. Jon Miller led the Cavaliers (3-0) with a game-high 24 points and 16 rebounds. WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Visiting Coppin State (2-3) had foul trouble early and struggled overall in a 91-51 loss to North Carolina. The Tar Heels (4-1) had four players score double digits; Amber Griffin was the lone double-digit scorer, with 12, for Coppin. ... Host Minnesota (4-1) did not make a field goal in the final four minutes of the game, but the Golden Gophers went 8-for-10 on free throws and defeated Navy, 62-55. The Mids (4-2) shot 39.6 percent for the game; and Navy senior Jade Geif had 17 points and 10 rebounds. ... With just under four minutes left in its home opener, Salisbury (3-2) ended the game on an 11-3 run, including a game-winning 3-pointer by junior Sarah Seipp as time expired, to give the Sea Gulls a 67-66 comeback win over visiting Catholic (2-2). In the second half, Seipp scored all 10 of her points, and Salisbury shot 66.7 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from behind the arc. COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY: Salisbury (17-4) lost, 1-0, to Bowdoin (18-3), which won its fourth Division III national championship at Old Dominion. Salisbury was held to just two shot attempts in the game, while Bowdoin tried 14. Sophomore Samantha Johnson, junior Summer Washburn and freshman Yumi Kim, who scored the game-winner in the semifinals Friday, were all named to the AllTournament team. WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Johns Hopkins lost, 1-0, in the NCAA Division III quarterfinals to Middlebury (17-1-3), which scored with 17 seconds left in the game. The loss ends a 12-game unbeaten streak for the Blue Jays (21-2-1). The season’s 21wins tie for the most in program history. WOMEN’S COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: A year after sharing the award, UMBC senior Mallory McIntyre has been selected as the America East Setter of the Year. In addition, McIntyre and freshman middle blocker Emily Witsaman were named to the America East first team. Junior hitter Hannah Schmidt (Mount de Sales), a 2011 rookie team selection, was chosen for the league’s second team. McIntyre and Schmidt were also honored on the academic team. ... Towson juniors Saitaua Iosia and Paige Sekerak were namedto the All- Colonial Athletic Association third teamandacademicteam, respectively. … Maryland (13-17, 5-13 Atlantic Coast Conference) lost to No. 14 North Carolina (26-3, 15-3) in five sets. The Terps lost the first two sets but had 24 blocks, the second-most by an ACC team this season. Freshman Ashlyn MacGregor tallied 12 blocks for the second consecutive match, while Emily Fraik had a career-high10 blocks and junior Ashleigh Crutcher led the offense with 25 kills. VARSITY FOOTBALL: The date for the annual Baltimore City-Baltimore County All-Star Football Game has been changed to Dec. 2 at Poly at 6 p.m. Admission is $5. MEN’S LACROSSE: Because of inclement weather, the LXM Pro Tour game scheduled for Saturday night in Tucson, Ariz., was postponed. There was no immediate announcement on whether the event would be rescheduled. —
