Pa. wideout Moore commits to Maryland

Four-star wide receiver D.J. Moore, a rising senior at Imhotep High School in Philadelph­ia, announced his commitment to Maryland via Twitter on Wednesday night. “I’m Blessed To Say That Today I Have Committed To Being A Maryland Terp,” Moore wrote. Rivals.com ranks the 6-foot, 200-pound Moore as Pennsylvan­ia’s No. 7 prospect in the class of 2015 and the nation’s 33rd-best wide receiver. According to Rivals, he received offers from 14 schools, including Boston College, Duke, Northweste­rn, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and local school Temple. “He was kind of going back and forth, going to see some schools this summer. I think the last time he went down [to Maryland] was pretty much the clincher,” Imhotep coach Albie Crosby said. “He got a great vibe from the school. He really enjoyed the campus, really enjoyed the coaching staff.” FOOTBALL: The Naval Academy announced Thursday that it has sold out its ticket allotment for December’s Army-Navy Game, which will take place at M&T Bank Stadium. MEN’S LACROSSE: Loyola Maryland assistant coach David Metzbower will join the North Carolina staff as offensive coordinato­r, sources said. Fellow Loyola High alumnus Joe Breschi, a Baltimore native, is the current Carolina head coach. Metzbower spent the 2013 and 2014 seasons at Loyola, where he took over for Dan Chemotti after the Greyhounds’ 2012 national championsh­ip. BASEBALL: Maryland second baseman Brandon Lowe and right-handed pitcher Mike Shawaryn have been named to the Baseball America Freshman All-America team. Lowe earned first-team honors, while Shawaryn received a spot on the second team. to participat­e in the U.S. under-17 men’s national team training camp, which begins Saturday in Carson, Calif. Kelly finished with five goals and 16 assists last fall to lift the Eagles to the Maryland Interschol­astic Athletic Associatio­n A Conference championsh­ip. This past weekend, he led the Baltimore Celtic Club under-16 team to the U.S. Youth Soccer Region 1 championsh­ip at the University of Rhode Island. The club went 5-0 to advance to the national tournament, set for July 21 at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds. “He’s taken a massive step forward and has really come into his own,” said McDonogh and Baltimore Celtic coach Brandon Quaranta. TENNIS: Francis Tiafoe, 16, of Riverdale Park in Prince George’s County lost, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-3, to fellow American Noah Rubin, 18, in a third-round match at the Junior Championsh­ips in Wimbledon, England. Tiafoe fell in doubles later in the day. WOMEN’S BOWLING: UMES graduate Maria Rodriguez, a former National Player of the Year and three-time college national champion, was the top seed at the finals of the USBC Queens in Reno, Nev. This would be her first major title since turning profession­al. WOMEN’S PREMIER SOCCER LEAGUE: The Washington Spirit and Boston Breakers played to a draw Wednesday night at the Maryland SoccerPlex in a game that featured six goals, six cards and a 30-plus-minute weather delay. Striker Jodie Taylor scored twice for the Spirit and drew a penalty in stoppage time to set up the equalizer by Diana Matheson. BOYS LACROSSE: The Baltimore Crabs won the under-19 boys Division I title at the Vail (Colo.) Lacrosse Shootout for the second year in a row Wednesday. Attackman Chase Wittich (Gilman), midfielder Jesse Uhlman (Westminste­r/Towson), defenseman Erik Evans (Calvert Hall) and faceoff specialist Hunter Moreland (Boys’ Latin/Johns Hopkins) were chosen to the all-tournament team. NBA: Washington has expressed interest in former veteran Wizards swingman Caron Butler, a person close to the free agent confirmed. Butler, 34, has also been contacted by the San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers, the person said.
