COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Behind a stellar six-inning performance from Hannah Dewey, Maryland defeated Penn State on Sunday, 5-3. The victory completes the series sweep for the Terps (2619, 8-7 Big Ten) their first ever in the Big Ten. NATIONAL WOMEN’S SOCCER LEAGUE: Christine Nairn (Archbishop Spalding) scored the tying goal in the ninth minute and an insurance goal in the 65th as the host Washington Spirit (1-1) earned a 3-1 win in its home opener against defending champion FC Kansas City (0-2) on Saturday night. MINOR LEAGUE BASKETBALL: The Bay Area Shuckers lost, 136-117, to the host Rockville Victors (15-3) in the American Professional Basketball League Elite Eight on Saturday night despite 27 points from Gus Chase (St. Frances). HORSE RACING: Joe Clancy, an Eclipse Awardwinning writer and editor of Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred magazine, will receive the David F. Woods Memorial Award for excellence in journalism at the May14 Alibi Breakfast in the Terrace Dining Room at Pimlico Race Course, the Maryland Jockey Club announced. Clancy will be recognized for “Horse of a Lifetime,” a news account of the 2014 Preakness won by California Chrome. The award honors the memory of a longtime racetrack publicist and Evening Sun columnist. NBC Triple Crown announcer Larry Collmus, a Baltimore native who got his start calling races at Bowie at the age of 18, and John Scheinman, recipient of the 2014 Eclipse Award for writing in a feature/commentary category for his moving story on the late horseman Richard Small, will receive the Old Hilltop Award for covering thoroughbred racing with excellence and distinction. JOURNALISM: The Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism at Maryland will present a panel on the past, present and future of sports media Saturday April 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Eaton Theater of Knight Hall in College Park. Bob Ford (Philadelphia Inquirer columnist), Emilio Garcia-Ruiz (Washington Post managing editor), Larry Michael (Washington Redskins Media senior vice president and executive producer) and Christy Winters Scott (basketball analyst), among others, will discuss their views and experiences with sports media and where they see the field heading in the future.
