Bitter series ends with a Royals win
The Royals overcame five ejections Sunday thanks to Kendrys Morales’ two-run double in a three-run eighth to give them a 4-2 victory over the A’s and two of three in a contentious series. Mets 7, Marlins 6: Matt Harvey won his third straight, Jeurys Familia earned his sixth save and Ruben Tejada had a three-run double in a seven-run fourth in the Mets’ eighth straight win. Nationals 4, Phillies 1: Stephen Strasburg allowed one run and struck out seven in 71⁄ innings as the Nats took three of four. Ryan Zimmerman went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Braves 5, Blue Jays 2: Jonny Gomes drove in four to back Shelby Miller (two runs in six innings) and hand the Blue Jays their fifth loss in seven games. Padres 5, Cubs 2: Will Middlebrooks and Yangervis Solarte hit two-run homers and Jon Lester yielded three runs in 51⁄ innings to remain winless in three starts. Pirates 5, Brewers 2: Pedro Alvarez homered to lead a sweep and send the Brewers to their worst start in team history (2-10). Astros 4, Angels 3: Drew Butera’s wild throw set up the decisive 2-run fifth. Luis Valbuena homered. Jose Altuve had three hits. Orioles 8, Red Sox 3: Adam Jones went 4-for-5 (three-run double, two-run HR) in the rubber game. Yankees 5, Rays3: Chase Headley and Mark Teixeira drove in two as the Yankees finished their first sweep of three games or more at Tampa since Sept. 13-15, 2005. Tigers 9, White Sox 1: Yoenis Cespedes hit a grand slam and a two-run homer. Shane Greene moved to 3-0 in the rubber game. Twins 7, Indians 2: Torii Hunter hit his first HR for the Twins since 2007 to support Trevor May (six innings, one run). Diamondbacks 5, Giants 1: Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer to help Jeremy Hellickson get his first win with the D’backs, who took three of four. Mariners 11, Rangers 10: Austin Jackson singled in the tying run in the ninth and Nelson Cruz followed with a two-out single for his fifth RBI (he homered twice in the first three innings). Dodgers 7, Rockies 0: Howie Kendrick, Scott Van Slyke and Joc Pederson hit HRs as LA stretched its win streak to seven. Cardinals 2, Reds 1: Kolten Wong’s sacrifice fly in the eighth was the difference. Matt Carpenter homered in the first. Adam Wainwright tossed eight innings to help finish the series sweep.
