Anna C. Junkin, nurse, restaurant partner

Anna C. Junkin, a former OB/ GYN nurse who later with her husband became partners in the Flaming Pit restaurant, died Friday at Lorien Mays Chapel of complications from a stroke. She was 89.

The daughter of Kelly Edward Clair, a coal miner and farmer, and Emma Carolyn Swango Clair, a homemaker, Anna Elizabeth Clair was born and raised in Berea, Ky., where she graduated from high school in 1943.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in 1947 in home economics, she enrolled at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing in 1950.

Mrs. Junkin began her nursing career at Hopkins Hospital, eventually becoming head nurse in the obstetrics and gynecology department.

After marrying William Junkin, an industrial engineer at Edgewood Arsenal, in 1951, the couple settled in Timonium, where they raised their two children. Mr. Junkin died in 1991.

In 1970, Mrs. Junkin and her husband became partners of Ordell Braase, the Baltimore Colts defensive end, who opened the Flaming Pit Restaurant in the Padonia Village Shopping Center in Timonium.

Mrs. Junkin was the restaurant’s bookkeeper until it was sold in 1981. She enjoyed reading and bridge. Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Peaceful Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Center, 2325 York Road, Timonium.

Mrs. Junkin is survived by a son, David E. Junkin of Timonium; a daughter, Clair J. Peddicord of Lutherville; and four grandchildren.
