Late surge helps Tigers vs. Yankees

J.D. Martinez and Yoenis Cespedes hit consecutiv­e RBI singles in the seventh inning, and Joba Chamberlai­n got Jacoby Ellsbury to hit into a double play in the eighth as the Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees, 2-1.

Yankees starter CC Sabathia was looking for his first victory since April 24, 2014.

Tigers starter Alfredo Simon was 2-0 this season and 6-1 in his last seven April starts dating back to last season. Simon was 0-3 with 5.57 ERA lifetime vs. the Yankees, however. Reds 6, Brewers 1: Zack Cozart’s three-run home run highlighte­d a four-run sixth to snap a fourgame skid. Joey Votto added a two-run shot in the seventh.

The Reds had lost four straight and seven of eight. The Brewers were last in the NL with 30 runs scored and three home runs, none in the last six games. White Sox 4, Indians 3: Melky Cabrera capped a four-run ninth with an RBI single off Cody Allen. Alexei Ramirez doubled home two runs and Gordon Beckham had a tying RBI single in the inning. Royals 7, Twins 1: Edinson Volquez allowed one run and five hits in seven innings and Kendrys Morales and Paulo Orlando each drove in a pair. Red Sox 7, Orioles 1: Justin Masterson benefited from five unearned runs in a soggy Patriots’ Day game shortened by rain to 61⁄ innings. Padres at Rockies: Jorge De La Rosa returned from the DL to start for the Rockies. He was 45-14 with a 3.98 ERA lifetime in Denver and his 69 wins were three short of the franchise record held by Aaron Cook. A’s at Angels: The Angels had won seven of the last eight meetings with the A’s and seven of the last eight at home. The Angels had won the last 10 starts by Matt Shoemaker. Astros at Mariners: The Mariners had won two straight. The Astros were in first place in the ALWest. It was the latest they led a division since 2007, when they led the NL Central with a 15-9 mark.
