O’Malley’s case against Hillary Clinton

Your report on former Gov. Martin O’Malley’s speeches states that Mr. O’Malley has sought to distance himself from Hillary Clinton but doesn’t mention the issue that most distinguishes Mr. O’Malley from his rival (“O’Malley: More than one Democrat should run,” April 19).

Mr. O’Malley is campaigning on getting tough on Wall Street’s excesses by restoring the Glass-Steagall Act aimed at breaking up the “too big to fail” banks and using regulatory agencies to enforce the law against bankers who break the law.

Sen. Barbara Mikulski and Reps. Elijah Cummings, Donna Edwards and former Rep. Roscoe G. Bartlett all co-sponsored legislation to reinstate Glass-Steagall.

In Baltimore City, which took the big banks to court for fraud and now faces the prospect of tens of thousands of its citizens being cut off from basic services or dying from of drug overdoses and drug-related crime while banks launder drug profits, the following must be understood:

Replacing a predatory economy based on profiteering and speculation with a productive economy based on improving living standards is not only the issue that should determine the outcome of our next election but the issue that will determine whether the American people are free to build a better future or die enslaved to the bankers’ dictatorship.
