Report: Terps, Hoyas to play in November

-

A Washington television station is reporting that Maryland will meet Georgetown in the inaugural Gavitt Games early next season. WUSA-TV (Channel 9) reported that a date and location have not been announced, but a source familiar with the situation said the Terps have been promised a home game in the new series and that the game will be played Nov. 17, 18, 19 or 20. It it happens, it will mark the first time the two schools have been scheduled to play during the regular season since 1993, when Joe Smith led the unranked Terps to an 84-83 overtime upset of the No. 15 Hoyas at USAir Arena. The teams met again in the NCAA tournament in 2001, with the 11th-ranked Terps beating the 21st-ranked Hoyas, 76-66, in the Sweet 16. In 2008, Maryland lost to No. 21 Georgetown, 75-48, in a third-place consolation game at the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla. In 2012, Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson said the Terps would not schedule the Hoyas in another sport until the men’s basketball teams played again. This year’s game will likely be played Nov. 17 or 18 because the Hoyas are scheduled to play at the 2K Classic in New York Nov. 20 and Nov. 22. The Gavitt Games, named in honor of longtime Big East commissioner Dave Gavitt, are a first-year event between eight schools from the Big Ten and eight from the Big East. Under the current format, teams will play a home-and-home series in consecutive years, meaning the Terps will play at the Verizon Center in 2016. A Maryland athletic department spokesman could not confirm the WUSA-TV report. BASEBALL: Maryland sophomore right-hander Mike Shawaryn was named National Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: Coppin State’s Ariel Richard received an NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women’s Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in Athletics. WOMEN’S TRACK ANDFIELD: Salisbury sophomore high jumper Meghan McGowan ( Arundel) was named Capital Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week.
