Rape charge against Melvin Scott dropped

Durham, N.C., County District Attorney Roger Echols said Wednesday that his office dismissed a second- degree rape charge against former North Carolina player Melvin Scott (SouthernBa­ltimore) this week. Scott, 33, was arrested in November. A Durham police spokeswoma­n said at the time that the case involved “a female acquaintan­ce” and was connected to an incident in August. Butch Williams, an attorney representi­ng Scott, said the dismissal would help Scott “get his life back together and get on with life.” Scott played for the Tar Heels from 2001 to 2005 and was a reserve on the school’s 2005 national championsh­ip team. JURISPRUDE­NCE: Former Maryland men’s center Trayvon Reed, whose brief career in College Park ended abruptly in July when he was arrested on theft and assault charges, was sentenced Tuesday to 15 days in jail. According to al.com, a Maryland judge ordered Reed, now a freshman center at Auburn, to begin his sentence May 11. Reed pleaded guilty to second-degree misdemeano­r assault in December. MEN’S COMMITMENT: Two years removed from starring at Poly, 6-foot-8 forward Chas Brown has committed to play at Albany, the reigning America East champion. “It’s a mindblowin­g experience. Everything is paid for,” said Brown, who also was recruited by Coppin State, Lamar, Louisiana Tech, Murray State, Robert Morris and Wright State. WOMEN’S COACHING: Maryland hired Bett Shelby and Bryce McKey as assistant coaches. In two seasons at Virginia Tech, Shelby helped the Hokies bring in a top-20 recruiting class and win two Atlantic Coast Conference tournament games for the first time in school history. McKey has been an assistant at Xavier for the past four seasons. ... CCBC-Dundalk named Alexis Washington head coach. Loyola Maryland senior Kara Burke (Dulaney) was named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for her sport. MEN’S TENNIS: UMBC juniors Justin Carter of Randallsto­wn and Jaan Kononov were named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference team. BASEBALL: Anthony Gingerelli doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving Bucknell (21-21) a 7-6 victory over visiting Towson (11-27-2).
