Preseason all-conference honors for Maryland, Navy

The Maryland football team had six players named to Phil Steele’s preseason All-Big Ten Conference team, and kicker Brad Craddock was the Terps’ lone preseason All-American. Cornerback Will Likely and Craddock were named to Steele’s All-Big Ten first team. Likely also made third team as a kick returner and fourth team as a punt returner. Defensive back Sean Davis was named second-team All-Big Ten, and offensive lineman Andrew Zeller and defensive end Yannick Ngakoue made the fourth team. Marcus Leak also was named to the fourth team, but the wide receiver withdrew from the university last week. — MORE COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Navy fullback Chris Swain was named a preseason secondteam All-American Athletic Conference selection by Steele. Also honored were quarterbac­k Keenan Reynolds (third team), guard E.K. Binns (third team), wide receiver Jamir Tillman (fourth team), defensive end Will Anthony (fourth team) and linebacker Daniel Gonzales (fourth team). NFL: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed second-round draft pick Donovan Smith (Owings Mills) to a four-year, $6.068 million contract. The deal for the offensive tackle includes a $2.67 million signing bonus. WOMEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: Former Navy attacker Loren Generi and former Loyola Maryland attackers Hannah Schmitt and Annie Thomas (John Carroll) and midfielder Taryn Van Thof were selected to play in the Intercolle­giate Women’s Lacrosse College Associatio­n Division I North-South Senior game, held at Cabrini College on Saturday. MEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: Towson defenseman JoJo Ostrander was named a second-team Eastern College Athletic Conference All-Star. VARSITY GIRLS LACROSSE: Seven local players were added in the final wave of selections for the July 3 Under Armour All-America Lacrosse at Johnny Unitas Stadium. Bryn Mawr’s Alex Argo, McDonogh’s Kelsey Cummings, Century’s Shelby Mercer and Kristen Yanchoris, Archbishop Spalding’s Alexis Phillips, Glenelg’s Megan Taylor and Severn’s Caroline Steele were added in the last of four waves. — HORSE RACING: Joe Sharp, the husband of former jockey and Maryland circuit star Rosie Napravnik, tweeted that Napravnik had given birth early Monday morning. Carson Wayne Sharp weighed 6 pounds, 15 ounces. HONORS: Evodie Ngoy (Digital Harbor), Chikaodi Nwanegwo ( Poly), Enoch Ofori (Owings Mills), Birendra Rai (Digital Harbor) and Nikki Woodson (Francis Scott Key) are the members of this year’s class of Ravens Scholars, selected for their academic achievemen­ts, extracurri­cular participat­ion and community service. Each was awarded a renewable $5,000 academic scholarshi­p. —
