Regina Welsh, a retired medical assistant who was a lifetime volunteer at what is now Stevenson University, died Friday at Stella Maris Hospice of surgical complicati­ons. She was 77. The daughter of Raymond H. Holter Jr., a Chessie System executive, and Elinor L. Holter, Mary Regina Holter — she never used her first name, family members said — was born in White Marsh and raised on her family’s Loreley farm.

She was a 1955 graduate of St. Stephen’s High School in Kingsville and earned a secretaria­l degree in 1957 from Villa Julie College, which is now Stevenson University.

Mrs. Welsh worked for 46 years as a medical assistant to Dr. Philip Whittlesey, a Baltimore internist, until his death in 2003.

She was married in 1960 to Frank W. Welsh, who was an aide to former Rep. Helen Delich Bentley. He died in 2008.

Mrs. Welsh, who resided in Ednor Gardens for 55 years, was a lifetime volunteer at Stevenson University, where she was a member of the university’s alumni board from 1994 to 2007 and served one term as its president.

At the time of her death, family members said, Mrs. Welsh was the longest-serving member of the President’s Advisory Council.

She received Stevenson University’s Alumni Loyalty Award in 2008.

Mrs. Welsh, who was a world traveler, often traveled with classmates from her college days.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. today in the chapel at Stella Maris Hospice, 2300 Dulaney Valley Road, Timonium.

She is survived by two brothers, Raymond H. Holter of Fort Myers, Fla., and Jerome C. Holter of Abingdon; three sisters, Nancy H. Collins of Parkville, Judy A. Plowman of Fork and Marjorie H. Robinson of Perry Hall; eight nieces and nephews; and 12 great-nieces and great-nephews.
