Five Bayhawks selected for All-Star Game

- By Bill Wagner

The struggling Chesapeake Bayhawks received some good news Tuesday when five of their players were selected for the Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game, June 13 at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston.

Chosen to represent the Bayhawks were goalkeeper Tyler Fiorito (McDonogh), defenseman Michael Evans (South River) and midfielders Matt Abbott, Ben Hunt (Severna Park) and Matt Mackrides.

Hunt is tied for third on the team with nine goals despite missing the past three games with a hamstring injury. He is making his third All-Star appearance.

Evans has sat out two straight games with a back injury, but remains one of the top shutdown defenseman in MLL. He is a five-time All-Star.

Fiorito ranks second in Major League Lacrosse with a .582 save percentage. The fourth-year professional out of Princeton leads the league with 121 saves through seven games.

Mackrides ranks second on the squad in scoring with 16 points, having scored nine goals and dished off seven assists. Abbott is a two-way midfielder who is instrumental to the Bayhawks as a wing on faceoffs and in the clearing game, but also plays offense and has totaled 11 points (six goals, five assists).

Boston Cannons defenseman Mitch Belisle, another Severna Park graduate, also earned an All-Star nod.

Commissioner Dave Gross said Houston was selected to host the All-Star Game because that city is under consideration for the next time Major League Lacrosse expands. B.J. O’Hara of the Denver Outlaws and Tim Soudan of the Rochester Rattlers will serve as head coaches for the game, which will be televised by CBS Sports Network at 7 p.m.
