Giants rookie Heston no-hits Mets

-

Chris Heston pitched the first no-hitter in the majors this season in his 13th career start, leading the Giants over the Mets 5-0 Tuesday night in New York.

The 27-year-old rookie allowed three baserunners — all on hit batters. He also had a two-run single for his first RBIs.

The Giants have thrown a no-hitter in four straight seasons, with Heston following Matt Cain’s perfect game against the Astros in 2012 and hitless gems by Tim Lincecum in 2013 and ’14. The only other team to accomplish that feat was the Dodgers from 1962-65, according to STATS. Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax pitched all four of those.

Heston (6-4) struck out 11 — six looking — and only two balls were hit to the outfield. Reds 11, Phillies 2: Joey Votto hit three home runs, joining Johnny Bench as the only Reds to accomplish the feat three times. Blue Jays 4, Marlins 3: Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run, walkoff homer in the ninth, extending the Jays’ winning streak to seven. Angels 8, Rays 2 : Albert Pujols tied Mickey Mantle for 16th on the all-time HR list with No. 536, and Cole Calhoun had four RBIs. Brewers 4, Pirates 1: Taylor Jungmann allowed one run in seven innings to win his MLB debut. Yankees 6, Nationals 1: Stephen Drew homered twice to back Masahiro Tanaka in the Yankees’ seventh straight win. Tigers 6, Cubs 0: Anibal Sanchez blanked the Cubs on six hits through 72⁄ innings. Orioles 1, Red Sox 0: Steve Pearce scored on a wild pitch and four Orioles combined on a five-hitter. Mariners 3, Indians 2: Robinson Cano broke out of a slump with two doubles and an RBI. White Sox 4, Astros 2: Sox rookie Carlos Rodon outdueled Astros lefty Dallas Keuchel, allowing four hits over six shutout innings. Royals 2, Twins 0: Chris Young lost his no-hitter with one out in the seventh when Trevor Plouffe tripled for the Twins’ only hit.. Braves 6, Padres 5: Joey Terdoslavich’s pinch-hit homer in the eighth broke a 5-5 tie. Cardinals at Rockies: Michael Wacha was 6-0 with a 1.59 ERA in seven road outings, each resulting in a Cardinals victory. Rangers at Athletics: Sonny Gray had won three straight starts and pitched 232⁄ consecutive scoreless innings against the Rangers. D’backs at Dodgers: Andre Ethier and Jimmy Rollins homered in the Dodgers’ 9-3 win Monday.
