Wizards to open training camp with 3 days at Towson

The Washington Wizards will open training camp next Tuesday at Towson University’s SECU Arena. The Wizards, formerly the Baltimore Bullets for 10 seasons, will spend three days at Towson before completing camp with three days at Washington’s Verizon Center, where they held camp last year. “Our franchise has a great tradition and long history in the city of Baltimore, and we’re proud to return there for training camp,” Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld said. “Our players and coaches are excited to get to work and the entire organizati­on is looking forward to the start of the season.” Washington’s first preseason game is scheduled for Oct. 6 against the Philadelph­ia 76ers at Verizon Center. — MEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Maryland senior Mael Corboz is one of 60 candidates nominated for the Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be a Division I senior and have notable achievemen­ts in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competitio­n. Corboz, a team captain, maintains a 3.4 GPA as an engineerin­g major. … Navy seniors Jackson Morgan and P. J. Suess were selected as Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respective­ly. WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Navy freshman Eleanor Pratt was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week. WOMEN’S COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Towson freshman Jocelyn Kuilan was named Colonial Athletic Associatio­n Rookie of the Week honors. … Coppin State senior Cindy Okpegbue was recognized as Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Week. WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Loyola Maryland’s nonconfere­nce schedule will feature 11 games against team from10 conference­s, including the Big East Conference, Big Ten Conference, Conference USA, Atlantic Sun Conference, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, America East Conference, Colonial Athletic Associatio­n, Ivy League, Northeast Conference and MEAC. WOMEN’S COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY: Johns Hopkins senior Sophia Meehan was recognized as Division III National Runner of the Week and Centennial Conference’s Runner of the Week. MEN’S COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY: Navy junior Ryan McCoy earned Patriot League Runner of the Week honors. NFL: A day after electing not to use him on any defensive plays despite the fragile state of their secondary, the Washington Redskins cut former second-round NFL draft pick David Amerson. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound cornerback started 15 games last season, but his inconsiste­nt play prompted team officials to sign free agent Chris Culliver to a four-year, $32 million contract this spring. Amerson is the highest- drafted player from 2013 to have been cut by his original team. — MLB: Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper and right-hander Stephen Strasburg shared National League Player of the Week honors.
