No. 11 S. River wins in field hockey

Bresnahan’s 2nd-half goal defeats No. 6 Severna Park

- By Bob Hough

No. 11 South River’s Kassidy Bresnahan wasn’t worried about scoring a pictureperfect goal. All she wanted to do was put her team on the board.

When she saw a loose ball in the circle midway through the second half of Monday’s field hockey game with No. 6 Severna Park, Bresnahan directed the ball toward the goal. She’s not sure how it happened, but the ball went into the cage for the only goal of the game in the Seahawks’ 1-0 victory over the Falcons.

“There was a deflection off the goalie. I just tried to hit it over everyone’s sticks,” Bresnahan said. “I think it actually hit a couple people’s feet, but it got in the goal and that’s all that matters.”

Bresnahan’s goal gave the Seahawks their third straight one-goal victory following their 1-1 tie with Archbishop Spalding on Sept. 9. They recorded their second shutout of the season and have given up just two goals in their four wins.

“It’s really big for us. We lost a lot last season and we’re very, very young,” South River coach Megan Atkinson said.

NO. 9 NORTH CARROLL 4, NO. 15 CENTURY 0: No overtime, no disappointing setbacks hanging over North Carroll (5-2, 2-0 county). In each of the previous two seasons, the Panthers faced No. 15 Century knowing the importance of the late September game in terms of winning a county championship. In both games, the Knights (4-5, 0-1) came away with overtime victories, last year’s helping them win the county crown.

This time, things were much different. North Carroll knocked in three first-half goals to gobble up all the momentum and cruised to a victory Monday that took a little sting out of its heartbreaking defeats to Century in recent memory.

“That was an awesome feeling,” said senior defender Lily Fryfogle.

DULANEY 4, NO. 14 NOTRE DAME PREP 1: Emma Klein scored twice for the Lions (3-1) while Olivia Kenny tallied the lone goal for the Blazers (4-1).

MOUNT DE SALES 2, C. MILTON WRIGHT 0: Mackenzie Griffith scored both goals for the Sailors (5-1-1). Natalie Corson led the Mustangs with 14 saves.

NORTH HARFORD 2, ST. PAUL’S 0: Sarah Jackson found the back of the cage twice for the Hawks, as Skylar Limpert blanked the Crusaders.

ROLAND PARK COUNTRY 2, SEVERN 0: Louisa Huber and Andi Weinberg scored for the Reds, while Bella Beattie added two assists.

GLENELG COUNTRY 6, ST. JAMES3: Erynne Rasheed and Megan Hooper each scored twice for Glenelg.

NO. 5 ARCHBISHOP CURLEY 5, NO. 7 C. MILTON WRIGHT 3: Tre Pulliam and Tyler Jackson scored twice each to lead the Friars past the Mustangs (1-2).

Pulliam put Curley ahead 10 minutes into the game, but the Mustangs countered with two goals in just 56 seconds. David Bishop scored a header on a cross from Conner Appleby with 15:09 remaining and Mark Cantor tallied a low left-footed shot just inside the post on a pass from Jayson Butler with 14:13 to play in the half.

Curley evened the score seven minutes later with a goal from Jackson. Dylan Poetzel put Curley ahead for good with just three seconds left. Brett Sutton assisted on the goal.

Pulliam added his second goal in the second half’s fifth minute, getting behind the CMW defense and pushing a low shot past Mustangs keeper Ryan Miller.

CMW’s final goal came on a direct kick by Kyle Walter at the top of the box.

ARUNDEL 2, NO. 13 BROADNECK 1: Nate Garner and Tommy Magorka scored for Arundel (5-0). Kevin Hertel scored for Broadneck (2-3).

PERRYVILLE 2, ABERDEEN 1: Nick Roberts (sixth minute) and Chris Hawley (33rd minute) scored to lead the Panthers (2-0) to a win over the Eagles (4-2).

ST. MARY’S 1, INDIAN CREEK 1: Indian Creek’s Mario Cameiro struck first, but Jake Norris of the Saints (1-1-4) tied it.
