Coppin St. men routed by Kansas St.

Justin Edwards and Wesley Iwundu scored 14 points each, and host Kansas State cruised past the Coppin State men’s basketball team, 83-58, on Wednesday night.

Dean Wade and Stephen Hurt scored 12 points apiece and Austin Budke added 11 to round out a balanced effort for the Wildcats (7-1), who are off to their best start since the 2012-13 season.

Terry Harris Jr. scored nine of his 14 points in the first half to lead Coppin State (2-7). James Sylvester added 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Coppin State was 8-for-34 from the field in the second half and shot 29 percent overall, including 2-for-21 from 3-point range.

NO. 1 MICHIGAN STATE 78, UMES 35: Denzel Valentine had 11 points, 10 rebounds and six assists to help the host Spartans (10-0) rout the Hawks (1-8).

Michigan State is off to its best start since the 2000-01 season, when it was defending national champion and won its first 12 games.

UMES had just one player score in double digits. Dominique Elliott had seven of his team’s 16 points in the first half and finished with 11.

Valentine and Bryn Forbes combined to score 17 points by halftime, when Michigan State led 33-16. Forbes finished with 14 points.

UMES next travels to No. 6 Maryland, with a game at 4:15 p.m. Saturday.

Women

NO. 19 SYRACUSE 88, COPPIN STATE 56: The host Orange (6-2) scored 51 points in the second half and cruised past the Eagles (2-5).

Taylor Ford made three of Syracuse’s 14 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 21 points.

Ford, a senior, had the first 20-point game of her career, helped by making her first five shots from the field.

Julia Chandler, Alexis Peterson and Brianna Butler hit three 3-pointers apiece for Syracuse. Peterson finished with 15 points, and Butler and Chandler had 11 apiece.

Omaah Tayong led Coppin State (2-6) with 14 points, and Janelle Lane added 13.

VIRGINIA TECH 73, MORGAN STATE 33: Sidney Cook had 14 points to lead the host Hokies (7-1) over the Bears (2-7).

Braennan Farrar had eight points for Morgan State, which trailed 15-2 after the first quarter.

DUQUESNE 95, UMES 59: The Dukes recorded their 14th straight home victory.

Shauntesha Bryant led the Hawks (3-6) with 15 points.
