Rassman wins Patriot scholar-athlete honor

Loyola Maryland senior forward Franz Rassman was named the Patriot League Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Wednesday. Rassman had 8.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game this season. He has a 3.98 GPA and will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in business administra­tion. MORE MEN’S BASKETBALL: McDaniel senior guard Wes Brooks, McDaniel senior forward Tim Stewart and Franklin & Marshall senior forward Cedric Moune (Glenelg Country) were named to the All- Centennial Conference first team. The second team included Johns Hopkins senior forward Matt Billups, and the third team included Hopkins senior guard Gene Williams, the conference’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year for his sport. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Maryland recruit Jenna Staiti was named Miss Georgia Basketball by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Staiti, a 6-foot-5 senior, led West Forsyth to a 25-7 record. MEN’S LACROSSE: North Carolina junior midfielder Stephen Kelly (Calvert Hall) was named United States Intercolle­giate Lacrosse Associatio­n Lids Team Sports Division I Defensive Player of the Week and Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week. ... CCBC-Essex (2-0) remained second in the National Junior College Athletic Associatio­n poll behind Onondaga Community College (1-0). Anne Arundel CC (1-0) is fifth and Howard CC (1-0) is sixth. WOMEN’S LACROSSE: Harford CC (0-0) is third and Howard CC (0-0) is fifth in the NJCAA poll. HALLS OF FAME: Johns Hopkins will induct eight members into its Athletic Hall of Fame on April 30. The class comprises Kyle Harrison (men’s lacrosse), Matt Campbell (football), Heidi Pearce (women’s lacrosse), Matt Doran (men’s soccer), Brian Mead (water polo), Karl Sineath (baseball), Jerry Pfeifer (men’s lacrosse and football) and Tom Calder (athletic director). The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame announced its inductee class, which includes Charlie Stukes, a 1967 graduate of Maryland State (now UMES). Stukes played quarterbac­k for the Hawks and defensive back for the Baltimore Colts and Los Angeles Rams. ADMINISTRA­TION: Jim Paquette, assistant vice president and athletic director at Loyola Maryland, has been named a I-AAA Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year, an honor that will be awarded at this summer’s National Associatio­n of Collegiate Athletic Directors Convention in Dallas. Paquette will be one of four honorees in the I-AAA division, a group made up of NCAA Division I schools without football.
