No. 16 Hopkins women fall to No. 9 Penn State

Cyr scores four goals for Nittany Lions in 11-7 win

Madison Cyr (Winters Mill) scored a game-high four goals to lead No. 9 Penn State to an 11-7 victory over No. 16 Johns Hopkins on Wednesday in women’s lacrosse.

Cyr had a natural hat trick, scoring three goals in a row in the second half with 18:42, 8:59 and 8:11 remaining.

She scored her first goal at 27:49 and four of the first five goals of the second half.

Steph Lazo (St. Mary’s) gave the visiting Nittany Lions (3-1) a 1-0 lead on a free position with 19:56 left in the first half. Haley Schweizer answered for the Blue Jays (3-2) to tie the score at 1 with 15:41 left in the first half.

Penn State’s Jenna Mosketti (Fallston) scored the go-ahead goal with 9:33 left in the first half and started an 8-0 run that spanned both halves.

Johns Hopkins finished strong, scoring three goals over the final 1:13.

The Blue Jays’ Caroline Federico (Maryvale) made 10 saves, and Emily Kenul scored twice.

AMERICAN 11, MOUNT ST. MARY’S 10: Molly Morris had seven points on a career-high five goals and two assists, but the host Mount (0-3) lost to the Eagles (3-3).

Morris scored three of her five goals in the second half, including the tying goal with 5:11 remaining in the game.

The senior leads the team with six goals and nine points this year. Sammie Knapp (Loch Raven) helped pace the Mount with three goals and one assist, and Kelly Maloney (River Hill) and Nicole Lantuh had a goal and an assist each.

NAVY 9, GEORGE WASHINGTON 1: The host Mids (5-1) won their third straight and beat the Colonials (0-3).

Navy’s Katie Gallagher (C. Milton Wright) led the way with a hat trick, and Jenna Collins (River Hill) and Codi Mullen each scored twice.

Navy opened with a 7-0 run. Ingrid Boyum anchored the Mids defense, making six saves. George Washington’s Gabi Hull scored with 5:22 left in the game.

State men

FROSTBURG STATE 8, MESSIAH 6: The host Bobcats scored twice in the fourth quarter to break a 6-all score and improve to 4-0.

Keegan Colgrove (Dulaney) scored the go-ahead goal with 10:59 left, and Nate Collins added an insurance goal with 3:21 left. The Falcons fell to 1-2.

Nation women

NO. 7 VIRGINIA 16, WILLIAM & MARY 8: Posey Valis (McDonogh) scored four goals to power the host Cavaliers (4-1) past the Tribe (2-2).

Kelly Boyd (St. Paul’s) scored twice for Virginia.

NO. 9 PENN 15, RUTGERS 8: The host Quakers improved to 2-1 as the Scarlet Knights (1-4) lost their fourth straight.

NO. 15 BOSTON COLLEGE 9, MASSACHUSETTS 8: The host Eagles (3-2) took a one-goal lead at the half and made it stand up to beat the Minutewomen (4-1).

Sarah Mannelly had three goals and three assists to power Boston College.
