Mount rallies in Northeast; UMBC falls in America East
Mount St. Mary’s rallied from a14-point deficit in the second half to defeat host St. Francis Brooklyn, 60-51, in the Northeast Conference quarterfinals Wednesday night.
The Mount (14-18) got off to a quick start, taking a 10-2 lead four minutes into the game.
BK Ashe paced the Mount with 18 points, and he finished the night with 1,000 career points.
Yunus Hopkinson led St. Francis Brooklyn with 18 points. The Terriers finished 15-17.
Trailing 38-24 after a layup by Tyreek Jewell with 17:10 left in the second half, the Mount rallied. Gregory Graves made a jumper and Ashe followed to cut the deficit to 10. After another layup by Jewell, Will Miller hit back-to-back 3-pointers to make the score 42-34.
Elijah Long (John Carroll) then scored in the paint, and Taylor Danaher converted a three-point play to make it 42-39 with 11:51 left. Ashe then hit a 3-pointer to cap an 11-0 Mount run to tie the game.
The Mount advances to the semifinals to face second-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday at 2 p.m.
STONY BROOK 86, UMBC 76: Jameel Warney scored 27 points and grabbed a career-high 23 rebounds for the top-seeded host Seawolves (24-6) in the opening round of the America East tournament.
The Retrievers (7-25) were within 67-66 with six minutes left, but their front line started to get into foul trouble. Nolan Gerrity fouled out with 5:34 remaining, Cody Joyce followed at the 4:48 mark and Sam Schwietz at 1:23.
Warney missed two free throws with 3:27 left, but grabbed the rebound and was fouled after his putback. He didn’t complete the three-point play and Stony Brook (24-6) led 7471.
Women
LOYOLAMARYLAND58, HOLY CROSS 45: The host Greyhounds (14-15, 11-7 Patriot League) won their fourth straight and will host Navy in Monday’s Patriot League quarterfinal.
The Crusaders fell to 13-16, 10-8. Jeneh Perry and Colleen Marshall each scored 14 points for Loyola.
The Greyhounds trailed by six after the first quarter but went on a 19-8 run for a 29-24 halftime lead. Loyola finished strong with a 15-7 run in the fourth quarter.
AMERICAN 61, NAVY 56: The host Eagles (7-22, 5-13 Patriot League) shot 80 percent from the field in the fourth quarter to rally past the Mids (15-14, 9-9).
American outscored Navy 20-9 in the final period, making it a nearreversal of when the teams met a week ago in Annapolis. In that game, Navy outscored American 20-6 in the fourth quarter to post a 65-52 victory.
The loss places the Mids sixth in the Patriot League’s final regular-season standings.
DREXEL 74, TOWSON 33: The visiting Dragons (17-12, 13-5 Colonial Athletic Association) used a 20-3 run in the second quarter to pull away from the Tigers (6-23, 3-15) in the regularseason finale.
Drexel shot 54 percent from the field and was led by Sarah Curran with 13 points. Brittany Tarr and Sianni Martin each scored nine points for Towson.
Drexel opened with an 8-3 lead and led 34-13 at the half. The Dragons continued to shoot the ball well as they posted a 50 percent field-goal percentage in the third quarter and shot 72.7 percent in the fourth quarter.
