Morgan men lose to top-seeded Hampton

Ninth-seeded Morgan State scored the last six points, including a 3-pointer by Donte Pretlow (Dunbar) at the buzzer, but lost, 83-81, to topseeded Hampton in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s basketball quarterfin­als Wednesday night in Norfolk, Va. The Bears (9-22) led by as many as seven points early but fell behind 12-11 with 16:37 left in the first half and never retook the lead. Pretlow finished with a careerhigh 27 points. Reginald Johnson Jr. had 19 points and a career-high 13 assists for the Pirates (19-10). Hampton shot a season-high 51.5 percent (34-for-66) from the field and grabbed 16 offensive rebounds. MORE MEN’S BASKETBALL: Maryland commit Kevin Huerter was named Mr. Basketball for New York state. Huerter, a 6-foot-61⁄ 170-pound senior guard from Clifton Park who can play with and without the ball, is rated the nation’s 46th best recruit by ESPN. WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Raven Bankston scored 18 points to lead a foursome of double- digit scorers as 10th- seeded Towson (6-23) won, 75-61, over seventh seed William & Mary (15-14) in the opening round of the Colonial Athletic Associatio­n tournament in Upper Marlboro. The Tigers will face second-seeded Drexel in a quarterfin­al today at 5 p.m. Other leading scorers for Towson included Dominique Johnson (17), AJ Timbers (15) and Sianni Martin (14). MEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: A stomach virus outbreak at Lafayette has forced the university to suspend all campus activities this weekend, meaning that the Leopards will not be able to play Saturday at Navy. A new date and time have yet to be announced. MORE MEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: Towson redshirt senior goalie Tyler White was named NCAA Defensive Player of the Week. MAJOR LEAGUE LACROSSE: The league’s championsh­ip semifinals will be held at neutral sites for the first time, in Fairfield, Conn., and Blaine, Minn., on Aug. 13. MEN’S GOLF: Woodmont Country Club in Rockville will host U.S. Open sectional qualifying for the 29th time in the past 30 years on June 6. The club has two 18-hole layouts, but for the third straight year, only the North Course will be used. WNBA: The Washington Mystics signed center Emma Meesseman to a contract extension through the 2019 season. GIRLS POLO: College Park-based Maryland won the Girls’ National Interschol­astic Championsh­ip for a third consecutiv­e year, defeating Garrison Forest, 15-8, in the final at Empire Polo Club in the 25th anniversar­y event in Indio, Calif. The tournament’s all-stars included Maryland’s Maddie Grant and Garrison Forest’s Lila Bennett and Hannah Reynolds. —
